Feature request: Motor runtime
Hi,
I have got a request which I need for revision of a race engine. Is it possible to count the runtime of the motor and burn it to the flash on regular basis? It is only approximate number but it would help me to determine the revision cycle of the engine. At best it would be an absolute number of revolution counter.
My race engine has a limited con-rod bearing lifetime.
What are your thoughts?
Regards, Thomas

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
Automated burning to flash has inherent risks of using up flash and corruption if the ECU is turned off during a burn.
It may be better to add a mechanical "run hours" counter as used on industrial machinery.

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
That would likely interfere with SDcard datalogging.

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
If you power a runtime meter from the fuel pump power you would only accumulate time if the motor is running, not simply powered up.

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
Look for a motorcycle/ATV type tachoometer/hour meter. They are cheap and only accumulate hours when there is a tach signal present.
Find the Manuals up top under Quick links: Manuals.

This is what we use on the marine engines all the time.

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
We are talking about MS2, why not simply store the runtime in a file at the sd card? There is no problem with write cycles.
And i think when you just count seconds that would be enough for a general maintanance rountime counter.
It is not needet to count every millisecond....

Re: Feature request: Motor runtime
Piggy backing on your idead Alfagta, I would also like suggest an Oil Life indicator. Its a low priority item but would be very beneficial I think.
Mechanical Engineering Student Anveshan Bommareddi has already written all the code here: https://etda.libraries.psu.edu/catalog/9507
Of course the variables would need to be tweaked per engine through oil samples.
