Feature request: Coolant pressure actions

Post by nvr2fst »

Any way to add a Coolant pressure action list?
Example:
Coolant pressure spike beyond threshold- pull timing, drop boost, limp mode, etc...

I want to use it as last effort to save my headgasket/engine if the head lifts under high boost.

Is this possible?

As i was increasing the boost duty cycle on my car this past weekend, i was wishing for the same!!

You could use the generic sensor input to switch switch timing tables. Use the blend feature and flat line 0% till the pressure you want to pull timing, or use the Loop programmable setting to do a reqfuel switch, or have it control the positive side of a relay from a programmable output to the boost valve or sowmthing

I think it would be great to add the generic inputs to the limp function so you can use any form of sensor (pressure/temp) to trigger a limp or engine cut. I imagine it would be simpler* to code from a logical POV instead of writing dedicated code for dedicated sensor types (oil pressure eng cut, coolant pressure, etc)...

My gut feeling is seeing a spike in water pressure would be too late to save the head gasket, but it would be well worth logging.

Semi related, I have a friend with a big block 68 barracuda race/burnout car. It has the breather for the coolant recovery bottle plumbed to the corner of the hood. A geyser from there is an "oh crap" moment.

It may be too late to save the head gasket but probably not too late to burst a hose or torch the block or head

You may save the pistons. Bad things happen fast under big boost. I have a friend the fought a small crack in a intake port that that took him almost a year to figure out. He was running about 30 lbs of boost. That sort of thing can be hard to find.

Scott Clark has a post somewhere that talks about this.

I'm bumping this because I think this is a critical feature for the big boost guys. After recent social media posts, i can't help but think this is a pretty important feature

Spiking isnt too much of a worry IMHO... if it spikes on boost, youve blow a HG, no biggie.

The problem is loosing all coolant pressure after the engine has become hot.
Its very easy to pop a coolant hose and not notice until youve cooked the head and lots of damage is done.

I agree that not enough pressure can be just as much of indicator to a problem as too much pressure, but ive seen 80psi in a system before anything burst, with regular hose clamps and hoses. That car torched the head and the block.Total loss. Looked like someone took a plasma cutter to them when we pulled it apart.

Are you guys thinking a way to trigger a lower rev limiter until some condition is reached? For example, if "water pressure" exceeds 30 PSI, lower rev limit to 2500 RPM until the "water temp" gets below 160 ... or something like that?

Where the things in quotes would be in a drop down box.

How do you deal with noise on the water pressure wiring compared to a true pressure spike? I can see doing logging of water pressure but that is easy to do now.

even if it takes the AFR saftey actions, but basically, yes.

As far as the noise, the same could be said about any sensor input. On a 0-100psi transducer, if you were getting spikes showing excessive PSI, i think there would be an issue that needs attention.

But if it were to follow AFR saftey actions, then it would have a time amount it would need before it took action.

Does anyone have a log of water pressure misbehaving?

I think you could do this with the existing programmable outputs and a latching relay to fool the ECU into thinking that the motor was in warm-up. You could then apply a lower rev limit, and add fuel.

I could get a log of hopefully normal coolant pressure in a few weeks if that would help.

I agree that are ways to make this work with the existing firmware but it would be that much easier if it were set up like the oil/fuel pressure shut offs.

It would be nice to have multiple generic shutdowns where you could select a generic ADC and build a curve for the shutdown. I don't think ign table switching off of high coolant pressure is viable since some of us are already using ign table switching based on MAP to gain more resolution.

think this should be happening. been running 30+ psi so this will be nice to log!!
