Ignition settings for LS2 (truck) coils

Post by prof315 »

Just curious.... what kind of ignition settingss are being used for LS2 coils. My settings seem to work ok but I was just wondering what other people are using.

Mine are as follows: Use table
First Deriv Prediction
Cranking Dwell 6.0 ms
Cranking Advance 10 deg
Standard Dwell
Max Dwell 2.8 ms
Min Dwell 1.0 ms

no latency
no overdwell
no underdwell
no spark trim

Thanks

Jeff-

That seems like super short dwell at 2.8ms max? Doesn't the write up Bruce did call for 5.5ms?

I'll take a look and see what I'm running. On my BMW, I have put about 6,000 miles on them already (which is a lot for this non-daily car) and it works great

Also, maybe someone else can say for sure, but I think they have internal limiters and protection? So you can let the shaft out a little bit from the MS.

Scott.

I'm running LS2 coils on my MSII 383 stroker. I use 5ms of dwell and they run great.

I did, twice.... and ran a search on the forums for LS2 coil threads and read all of them. I can never find the link to that page. I'm going to bookmark it right now.

The info concerning dwell times and the connector views would be really nice. I suspect that most MSers don't have access to the service information I do as an Auto tech by trade.
I can get factory schematics for most cars built in the last 30 + years
Thank you James!

The connector information is there already though? http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms3/ignition.html#coils and scroll down a little.
I'll get the dwell number added.

These are truck coils we are using. It's a boosted motor, about 15psi and 9.5 to 1 static compression. Not even a suggestion of ignition problems. Timing is dead on and the wiring instructions are spot on perfect.

I got mine at the local u-pick junkyard. $30 for 4 with the bracket and sub harness. BTW I'm a former GM dealership tech and I have only heard of ONE instance of failure with these coils. The guy who services our lifts has a 10 year old 1500 silverado with 325,000 miles on it. He has replaced ONE coil.

I never see them at our yard. I'd rather have the truck units as they mount better for me.

But 80 shipped for 6 was easy button for me.

I got the shells pins and seals at Mouser.

one of my local junkyards sells the complete 4.8 with truck coils for $150 lol

I figure if my engine blows, I pick up another 4.8 for $150, sell the coils for $60, the oil pan for $50 and the intake intake and throttlebody for $20 and the engine was almost free.

nice to live in truck country
