MS3X: how to drive high current coils (wasted spark or COP)

Post by Nusmi »

Hello, I have a MS3 + MS3X,

how to drive high current coils (wasted spark or COP) with the logic spark outputs

I look around the forum and the doc's, and I find a lot of wiring for PCB V3, V2 PCB / 2 coils wasted spark or COP,
I would like to drive coils with my MS3X

but I didn't know how to drive this high current ignition coils with the standard MS3X logic level ingition outputs.

5V logic outputs from MS3X surely can drive theses coils using an IGBT (like the BIP320 from Bosch), but how should I wire them? Like the standard MSextra LED outputs (330ohm resistor + IGBT) ? Any schematics are welcome.

thank you

I don't yet have an MS3X, so I drive the coil (drivers) off of the MS3 header that the MS3X ribbon-cable connects to. However, I "buffer" these with a 4049/4050 CMOS IC to protect the MS3.

Hi, Nusmi.

That looks about right to me. You might consider Jean Belanger's 4-channel driver card as a way to keep things neat.

That looks good except that you probably want to use 100R resistors instead of the 330R since there is already a 200R resistor on the MS3X. But you should ask Matt at DIYAutotune or James to confirm that. You may also want to add some fuse on the 12V line powering the coils.

merci de vos réponses ,

of course, the line before the relays has a fuse, the schematic is simplified to the point of interest

to ask Matt or James? they are on the forum? what user name

@ racingmini_mtl

internal output spark résistor of MS3X = ( 200Ohms ) + ( Résistor before BIP373 ) = 330 Ohms

= ( 330 ) - ( 200 ) = 100 => BIP résistor = 100 Ohms All right ?

merci

Agreed, that should work; but the input impedance of the BIP 373 is high enough that your add-on resistor could be even higher, up to 10K would probably also work and give more short-circuit protection for the '541 outputs. Don't need it though, the stock 200 ohm resistors are probably good enough...

I use 220R on the 4 channel ignition boxes I make. (As pictured in the manual.)

I am driving my coils with the four channel bosch module. I have two of the bosch units for my V8. Seems to be working well. If you need information on it, its in the documentation and you should be able to do a search for it on the forum.

Anything above 660ohm will give you problems, been there done that. Spark output from the BIP´s disappears after a short periode.

Quark is correct. BIP373s are Darlingtons, not IGBTs, and are driven by input current. Too much resistance and they won't spark.

Anyone modded the 4-channel injector/ignition driver card to use with the MS3X? Just trying to figure out how to go about this...looked in to the Bosch 211 drivers and don't want to spend that money, so I figure i'll try and figure this out.

We're getting ready to release a set of 4 channel ignition modules very soon. They're not the same as Jean's board; no injector drivers, only ignition.

Matt, sweet, that sounds exactly what I need......question is, will this need the MS3 expansion board.....or work with the standard MS3? Reason I ask is I am thinking I don't necessarily need the expansion board if I need one of these driver boards as add on anyway.

Any idea on pricing?

I got the idea and will be using three bip373's on my supra for a three coil wasted spark setup. My question is with the bip's mounted inside the box how are you exiting the ecu? With two db37's do I just use spare pins?

Thanks

Since this thread has been revived, I wanted to mention for anyone who sees it that the modules are, in fact, released.

It's in the Hardware Manual. Just look and you shall find.
