MS3 R11 and R32 potentiometer adjustment

Post by adamnreeves »

I am starting to install my cam sensor (hall) and the build manual says:

"Turn both pots (R11 and R32) full anti-clockwise - approx five turns. Then turn the top one (R11) two turns clockwise"

However turning both anti-clockwise for five turns and still turns, I've probably done about 10 turns or more now on both and still going......

There is no stop on those pots, in either direction; same on the mainboard pots. Usually you will feel and hear a very faint "click" when the pot gets to the end of its travel, that's a little spring-clip in there that acts kind of like an over-load clutch to prevent damage to the pot from trying to turn it too far. If you turn one 20 turns, in either direction, then for sure it will be at the end of its travel in that direction. I don't know if they are 10-turn or 20-turn pots (or even fewer turns), but the clip will keep you from damaging it by going 20.

For future reference, they're five turn pots.

I am using EDIS6 EDIS 6 with the module. What are the settings for the pots R11 and R32 - Hall effect sensor I think.

Thanks.

Similar problem here, I did not hear or feel any click. I did about 10 turns. I had to use multimeter to be sure that those pots did something at all.

Have you read the manual for setting the pots?

I have looked very hard but find settings for VR not EDIS when using a module.

Thanks.

When using EDIS alone (no cam sensor) you don't need to touch R11 and R32 because they aren't used.

When using EDIS and a cam sensor, it will most likely be a VR type cam sensor.

Thank you, James.

I am running jumpers from OPTOIN TO TACHSELECT and a jumper from TSEL TO OPTOUT and from XG1 TO XG2 and fromJS10 TO IGN and jumpers on D1 and D2.

Sound right. I got this from manual called "EDIS Ignition Control."

That doesn't sound like the MS3 manual at all!

Please read the current Hardware manual that matches your ECU. You can find the manuals by clicking on the "Manuals" link above.

I am looking at the MS3 hardware guide.

Pg 119 has "IDM" on pin 2 on the EDIS6 module connector - What is IDM?"

Pg 119 shows the SAW going to pin 3 on the EDIS6 module connector
Pg 118 show the SAW going to MS3X SpkA - pin 14 on the extra db37 cable

Pg 118 shows PIP going to "Tach in" on the MS3 - is that pin 24 on the db37 cable?

Does that sound correct?

I have moved the jumpers to VRIN TO TACHSELECT and VROUT TO TSEL and removed the other jumpers.

"The IDM signal present on all EDIS modules is used as the factory tach output to the ECU. This signal is used to determine the welfare of the ignition system. If a coil primary opens or does not fire, the IDM signal is not emitted, and thus the coil is faulty. The IDM signal is triggered by the flyback voltage of the coil being fired. The EDIS module processes this into a 512us pulse on the IDM line during operation. When the engine is stopped, but the Key is turned on (KOEOff), the EDIS module emits a 64us pulse every 262.144ms to indicate proper operation. Because of this, any tachometer operation from this line must filter out the 64us pulses."

Wow, fantastic explanation.
So ignore it or is there a way to use for tach signal on a conventional tachometer? Any wiring diagrams available?

Did my internal modifications sound right?

Thanks.
