Constraints on cam sensor tooth in edge mode

Post by Healey3000 »

Hi,

The trigger page of the manual explains how to set up a single tooth cam target with respect to Tooth #1. However, are there constraints on how wide the cam tooth can be? In an extreme case, imagine a half-moon cam target being used. The leading edge will take place well before the falling edge; would that still work as long as the falling edge were in the right place (having set the system up for falling edge)?

Thanks.

In edge mode, the code only looks for the selected edge, so long as the sensor provides this edge reliably in the correct place there shouldn't be a problem.

As long as it's a Hall effect sensor. A VR sensor doesn't work well with very wide teeth.

Thank you, James and Matt.

Yes, I plan on using a Hall sensor. I was hoping to simply lop off a semicircle or more at the top of a 0.5" diameter shaft to act as edges for the sensor. That would make the part more compact and there'd be one less component to machine and attach. Since an edge is all that's required by MS3, I think I can do it this way.

You could cut a small slot instead.

True...I have one drawn up that way as well. I'd have to test a slot with the sensor of choice to make sure it can resolve it. The Hamlin 55505 is the front-runner at the moment.

Thanks.

Hi,

How's this look? It has a .25" slot in a .5" shaft. Hamlin 55505 sensor, an upper ball bearing with oil seal below it and another ball bearing on the drive dog end.
