Oxygen Sensor Position

Post by streetrover »

Hello all!

I'm getting very erratic readings from my O2 sensor. The gauge will fluctuate wildly from 22.4 to 8.2. I've calibrated the sensor (Innovate MTX-L wideband. Perhaps the sensor is located too close to the collector. The information that came with the gauge specified mounting the sensor bung 24 inches from header collector. My exhaust guy placed it about 4 inches from collector. Could this be the problem? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob

4 inches downstream from the collector?

An exhaust leak upstream from the sensor can cause the problem you describe.

Yup, 4 inches downstream from the collector. No exhaust leaks though...

How far is it from the exit of the exhaust - is this one running nearly open headers, or a full length exhaust?

Entire exhaust pipe (from header collector on each side) is about 5ft, including dual glass-paks.
