ms3 with 36-1 cam wheel on V8

Post by pkm123 »

I have a Ford V8 that I have retrofitted with a Ford 36-1 wheel mounted on the camshaft. When I try to configure MS3 it gives me an error: number of teeth/cylinder mismatch.
Is there any way around this? Should I grind all the teeth but one off the wheel? I have a MSD distributor and 6AL-2 box. The induction is an ITB. I was hoping to run sequential.
Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I can't mount a 36-1 wheel on the crank.

Correct, 36-1 on the cam won't work on a V8, it gives 4.5 teeth per cylinder. 24-1 would work.

I can't think of any way to modify the existing 36-1 wheel.

Just curious: would it work to remove more teeth and make it a 12-1 wheel, with longer "gaps" than teeth, or does the arithmetic still come out uneven?

12-1 on cam = 12 teeth per 720 degrees / 8 cylinders = 1.5 teeth per cylinder = fail
36-1 on cam = 36 teeth per 720 degrees / 8 cylinders = 2.5 teeth per cylinder = fail
while
24-1 on cam = 24 teeth per 720 degrees / 8 cylinders = 3 teeth per cylinder = ok
36-1 on crank = 72 teeth per 720 degrees / 8 cylinders = 9 teeth per cylinder = ok

Thanks for explaining. I know it is in the manual, but have only used 60-2 and 24-1 wheels, so never bothered to learn about it.

That won't help either unless you also install a crank wheel such as a 36-1.

I thought I could use the VR off the distributor (MSD) for the main wheel (Basic Trigger) and the cam for the sync?

If you still have the distributor in place, then kind of yes. It work like a "dual-sync distributor" with "toothed wheel" mode. See the MS3 Hardware manual PDF.

There are these two stock Ford cam sensors.
