Strange #1 tooth angle problem

Post by ffr3247r »

Running firmware 1.3.2 and I am trying to set timing and can never get my fixed timing to match what my balancer shows.

Running a 36-1 wheel with a diy hall sensor. I can never get the timing on the balancer to match TS. I can get close but never exact. I command 30 and get 29 or command 20 and get 19. Then one more degree swings it way off. Whats the problem.

Are you running wasted sparkling, and using a dial-back timing gun?

I am using a dial back gun but not wasted spark. I'm using just a single coil.

Could it be a settings issue. I have single coil selected and under spark hardware it has mx3 as the selection. I'm not using the expansion board for spark. Should this be set to LED's?

if you are using the led to drive the coil then yes.

Just out of curiosity what does led stand for?

Could this setting give me goofy timing readings but engine still run?

Light-emitting diode should be 3 of them on the ecu, they can be used to drive an ignition transistor with a bit of work inside the ecu, where is your coil wired up to?

Haha. I had to laugh a little when I read that. I knew what a LED was but just thought that megasquirt was using it as a abbreviation for something else.

Coil has switch 12 on pos side and neg going to s5 on relay board.

This all started because I reloadd the base tune and was setting my timing. I just happened to pick 20 degrees as the fixed number. When I checked at balancer it was 19 so I changed the tooth angle to get it the same. When ever I change that the timing doesn't change. I kept moving the angle and the timing never moved. I finally did get it to move but it goes extremely advanced or retarded.

Should I be able to see the timing change by a degree if that's what I put in the tooth angle? Single degree is a small amount.

msq is set up to be using the ms3x card for the spark output, but if you are not using a this and are driving it off the main board you could be using either js10 or the led's it depends how your ecu was built.

When I built it I used the instructions to drive a single high current coil. So I guess led.

js10 can also drive a single high current coil depends what instructions you used did you jumper with a resistor from the top of r26 to igbtin? if so use leds as setting.

Ok. I just changed it and now I can control timing a degree at a time.

Now on to tuning. Got the idle straightened out.

Maybe this timing deal will help with my overheating issue. Timing retard can cause it to run hot.

Thanks for helping.

James,

Is this a common enough problem to be included in the manual? I have seen a lot of references to js10 (I think mostly an MS2 configuration?) for single high current coil. The current manual explains using a resister to the top of R26 to igbtin but I have not seen anything until this post that explains how to setup TS for spark hardware. TS defaults to MS3x. I am having this exact same issue and my search brought me to this post that says LED is correct when using the resister at the top of R26 to igbtin. Just thought it might be worth adding to the manual some place.
