MS3 SD Dataloging problem

Post by vlad_rally »

I have assembeld a MS3 for my rally car, made a mil-spec wiring loom to it, an have allot of problem with the dataloging. i have the start/stop button on the steering wheel, and at some point it gets in the loom together with the rest of the wires form the engine, the problem is that when i start the datalogging (push the button over half of second) the led beginst to notify me that it's recording, and if i leave it like this with the engine idling in about 5-30 seconds it stops, just as i would push the button again. I i have tried logging on insertion and it works even on high rpm and boost, all perfect. First i thought that it must be noise from the other wires, so i put another, shielded wire, connected the shield to the ground, and it stays on even more, it turns of only when i rev the engine, i tried putting this wire separately from the other, and it stays on even more, it shuts of when the boost comes...So, as it works perfectly on insertion, i'm thinking it's still noise problems. I even built a pull-up on it(even thow it's not required, so i can have either 1 or 0, to not let the pin 'in air' when the button is not presser, to act as a antenna from the rest wires, same as earlier) Can you built a code to have the sd dataloging stop when the button is pressed over half a second ? just at it starts ? this has to solve the problem. Thank allot, Vlad.

I wish you didn't even need a button and could autolog based on a parameter like RPM without a laptop connected. RPM>10 start logging, RPM <9 stop logging.

You CAN start logging based on RPM.

James, a rally has over 300km/day (including special stages) i want to see the datalogs in case i run into some problems, not recorde the whole stages, because if i were to do so, it will be hard for me to find exactly the spot where the misfired, etc, when i get to the service park...the service park is once 4-5 stages, and plus the sections of road between. if i can start the log whenever i feel something's wrong, i have the exact log when the problem occurred. Thanks

Vlad,
yes, I understand your concern here. In my reply above, I was responding to the other poster.

Are you able to replicate this problem in the garage? It would help me greatly if you could do that while taking a regular datalog on your laptop.
i.e.
start laptop datalog
start SD logging with button
*do whatever it takes to stop SD logging *
stop laptop datalog
upload as attachment here

I'm using a press button for data log in an old rx7 and do not have any problem with it, so it does work.

With the button being an input, are you returning to "Sensor ground"?

This is the one with the basic, non shielded wire in the loom, 0.25 mm silver plater siliconic wire, with the car standing, don't mind the tps, the connector was pulled out

That's a great topic. Has a pull-up on that wire cured the issue?
It's most definitely the NOISE.

sorry for the long wait till i replyed, nothing solvend the problem....unless i put a very short wire with a button near the ecu, betwin the datalog input and the internal ms ground, nothing solves it, pull-ups, grounds...shielded wire...so i was thinking, can the code modified to stop the logging like it starts ? after a half of second press ? i'm thinking that no noise can repliate a half second bridge to 0 (gnd)

Do you have access to a scope?
If there is noise causing a false trigger this will be able to prove or disprove the theory.

Rather than a pullup resistor, what about trying a capacitor so that noise will be conducted to ground. The principle is discussed here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoupling_capacitor

Off top of head I don't recall what conditioning might already be in place on your chosen input, but it might certainly be worth trying various capacitance values.
What input are you using for data logging, and what output are you using for the light?

Did you take the datalog I asked for?

that there was an attachment, but it was likely deleted in the recent clean up :)
