v10 36-1 wheel, usable?

Post by ashford »

i ran across a relativly cheap ford 6.8l v10. its even fire and factory 36-1 trigger wheel. i know that in the past the # cylinders bust be divisible by # teeth, just wondering if this still applies.

I thought Ford V10s used a 40-1 crank wheel, but I would be interested in the answer as well as I have a customer asking about a 36-1 cam wheel on a V8.

For even fire engines, most certainly the number of teeth per cam rev must be divisible by the number of cylinders. (So V8 won't work with 36-1 on the cam.)

For oddfire I need to double check - it is possible that it could be made to work, but it will depend on the oddfire angle.

you may be right, however i can't confirm either way. no pics exist that i can find and parts diagrams/ service manual all show v8 engines since they are similar.

Wouldn't you still need to have a wheel with a multiple of 5 as the number of teeth? So that would still make a 36-1 invalid.

It depends on whether the odd-ness could put the trigger on an actual tooth and whether the code would allow for that.

I thought the code used the actual teeth for half the cylinders and an offset from actual teeth for the odd cylinders. Which is why I thought the requirements were the same whether it's even or odd fire.
