Alternator control

Post by dochka »

Hi,
I'd like to control the alternator voltage directly from the ecu;
The alternator is Delco Remy CS130;
This is my first time doing this, so can someone help out on how to do things, I mean do I need to remove the regulator from the alternator and just control the voltage from the ecu? And how to wire it?
I'd like to have a steady 13.8V at all times

As far as I'm aware, the CS series alternators aren't designed for computer control in that way.

Nothing on a car - or at least nothing correctly designed - needs a carefully regulated voltage. MS uses its own 5 volt rail for this, where needed.

The problem is it depends just where you measure the 12 volts. Just about any circuit will have some voltage drop. So keeping one at exactly 13.8v isn't going to do the same with the others.

Decent ECU control of the alternator would mean a total re-design of the vehicle electrics.

It depends on the alternator! Many new ones are designed to be controlled by the ECU and MS3 supports that. The CS series isn't though.

You snipped the bit about it depending on where you measure the battery volts. :D

Folks,

I would like to use Alternator Control to control the voltage on a GM DR44G. The DR44G is supposed to be an updated version of the older AD244 and is controlled by the PCM. The car is primarily used for drag racing with 2 fuel pumps, an alky injection pump, the parking lights when running at night and whatever is needed to run engine electronics. It is street driven but not even close to being a DD, so no stereo, a/c, etc.

The problem I am dealing with is that TS never reports higher than 13.2V and as RPMs increase, the voltage drops to as low as 12.2V at WOT/max RPMs. Like the OP, I would not mind having a steady 13.8V at all times, unless it is not advisable to have it that high at WOT. Seems to me the pumps, coils and injectors would perform better. If this will work, it seems like the simple On-Off Control Mode with a Charge Mode Target Voltage of 13.8 is what I need.

TIA,
