VR or hall sensor which is best

Post by Yves »

As I'm rewiring currently for ms2 but plan on an MS3X change in the future. What is best : a VR sensor or a hall sensor. I've read criticism of both.

I would say hall all the way. Just so you have the proper tooth spacing.

Some people try to use a tiny little tooth wheel with tiny little teeth and they have lots of problems and blame the hall sensor.

VR sensors are generally regarded as more accurate at high RPMs, that's why the OEMs use them. Hall sensors can have a time lag on one switching edge. Ford's TFI hall sensor has a delay depending on temperature apparently.

I was planning on using the Holley 60-2 wheel for SBC.

http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/hly-556-102.

How difficult would it be to set this up. If more accurate, what VR sensor would be the way to go ?

I currently also use an MSD 8366 distributor. This has one VR sensor. I could potentially use a new reluctor wheel where I cut of all but one tooth. Would it be possible to us that as cam sensor ?
