which LS coils are the best ones to use?

Post by phughes69 »

Im assembling all the parts to convert my draw thru twin turbo system 454 in my boat to EFI. I will be converting to coil on plug and sequential injection. What are the best ignition coils to use? LS1 or the truck coils? or something else?

Many answers to that question beyond the electrical capabilities of the actual coil.

I'm using LS2 D514 coils because they have enough spark, they don't give me noise issues where arguably more power (that isn't necessary in my setup) would.

I chose these coils amongst a couple of others that would do the job (full sequential coil on plug) because they were easy to mount in my setup. The physical design was better than the truck coil

I am running the LS2 D585 truck coils (with the heat sync on the back). no noise. and work great.

Purchased mine through ebay. Best dollars spent so far. Had lots of misfires with my old setup due to low energy spark. The LS coils produce a really strong and healthy spark.

I second that. LS2 truck coils are the best bang for the buck. dyi is having a black Friday sale until dec 1. there race coil are the very best (same as the holley smart coil. turbo guys are lighting off menthol under 35 psi of boost.

{Insert obvious joke about smoking, tires, and burnouts] :D

Just watch the dwell on the D585s; they have overdwell protection that cut the current flow hard, which of course fires the plug, sometimes QUITE early. No more than 4.5ms

Delphi D514A's here as well.
Maximum dwell 4.0, autofires after that.

Decent size, nice prices available, a more modern coil (ls7) and is more than powerful enough for most setups. I run 2,4ms on my setup.

I'm running the d585 on my 2jz to 33psi and my buddy us running them to 35psi. I'm on 116 and he is on e85. We're running iridium plugs at .032 gap and we use the dwell table and run 2.5ms while cruising and 3.5ms under full power

thats good advice. mine are at 4.5 dwell always. i run my gap at .028. i was getting spark blow ouy at .035 @ 18 psi

Be real careful - you're pretty close to the auto cutoff point, which will add LOTS of unplanned and uncontrolled advance. Save your coils, melt your pistons ...

Regarding the dwell, with the D514 I'm running 4.5mSecs and have been for a couple of years without being aware that there is a 4mSec safety cut off that is causing a misfire.

Has anyone come up with an elegant mounting bracket for the truck coils?
(other than on factory valve covers etc)?

Pulled these iridium plugs out last week after ~80K miles.
Was starting a little rough (for a few seconds ran on 2, thought I had a vacuum leak)
...and wouldn't pull 19:1 at cruise anymore, but ran great otherwise, WOT and 17:1 cruise was fine.
I figured it was about time for a fresh set...

Even Std LS2 coils rock.
80K-irridium-plugs.JPG
The two on the right had the center electrodes eaten back almost 1/16" inch into the insulator, gap was pushing 1/4".
Always doing things the hard way, MS2 sequential w/ v1.01 mainboard, LS2 coils. 80 mile/day commuter status.
