Gm HEI install

Post by nathaninwa »

I'm finishing an HEI8 install today and when I was there last I noticed the MSD blaster coil had a ballast resistor on it. This was running accel dfi but using the hei8 module for coil control. I'm wondering if the last installer left it on there and should I take it off and supply 12v to the coil like all the install docs show?

You can eliminate the ballast, that was a necessity in the ignition-points days, to control coil heating. Dwell control now takes care of that function. Of course, you do have to set the dwell correctly...

That's what I figured and may explain some of the previous stalling issues

I'll start low around 2 to 2.5ms. It's nothing that needs performance, a 42 Chevy that just cruises to car shows

I found the HEI8 type ignition with external coil to be really weak in spark.

Got this running yesterday. Without the resistor. Seeing some spark knock Will to raise the dwell the next time I'm out I have it at 2.2ms on the blaster2 coil.

I also had to add a pull down resistor to the tach line to stop the spikes
