GenIV GM LS Engine CAM Fault

Post by 5.3LS10 »

Hey everyone,

I am settings up an MS3x that is running a LY6/LS3 variant GenIV GM LS engine. It is running the 58x pattern crank and 4x camshaft.

I have it connected to the jimstim and noticed the LEDs for the ignition coils were running is wasted spark configuration not COP even though it is setup correctly in ignition settings. I double checked all of my settings.

One questions I had was the check at tooth # for ignition options. Is that check cam sensor at 1st or 2nd crank revolution?

I have rewritten the pattern for the 60-2 jimstim pattern to make tooth 20 on second revolution high for camshaft but still getting the cam fault.

I have confirmed with the composite logger that the camshaft is going high on tooth 20 for the second crank revolution.

While I wait for a response I will change the jimstim pattern to have CAM on 1st revolution instead of second and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Shane

HA!

I fixed it.

For some reason the CAM signal was coming it slightly delayed. IF you look closely enough at the tooth log you will see the cam went HIGH slightly after tooth 20 so it was not registering. I enabled it for the tooth before and it works!

Just peeked at your msq versus mine. I'm checking for cam signal at tooth number 1. And I see your still at 84* tooth angle. You should verify tdc as mine came up to be 78* after syncing it all together

Thanks for the heads up. This is still just running on the jimstim but I will be sure to check that out once I get it running on the engine.

Are you running a Gen IV LS?

Little of topic but are you guys running the default Jimstim code? I also have my JimStim connected to my 2010 Camaro E38 to play around with it however I thought I only had the crank signal connected since I didn't think Jimstim supported cam... am I wrong? What version JimStim firmware you running?

I'm running ms3pro, so I don't own a Jim stim since you can't hook it up directly

There is a pin on the jim stim for 2nd trigger.

I had to modify the firmware on the jimstim to change the cam signal since it is a generic 60-2 signal not specific to 58X GM installs.

Any reason you are using tooth 1?

These are the settings from the MS3X hardware manual.

"Typical settings:
Spark mode = Toothed wheel
Ignition input capture = Rising edge
Spark output = Going High
Number of coils = Coil on plug
Trigger wheel arrangement = Dual wheel with missing tooth
Trigger wheel teeth = 60
Missing teeth = 2
Tooth #1 angle = 84 (adjust with strobe)
Main wheel speed = Crank wheel
Second Trigger Active on = Poll level
(c) 2014-5 James Murray 2015-10-12 Page 166/231
MS3X/V3.0 Hardware Guide
Level for Phase 1 = High
Check at Tooth # = 20
