MS3Pro - No spark - reloaded firmware - FIXED!

Post by dexion7 »

help!

no ignition coil signals or injector driver signals.

the coils are toyota yaris and the MS3Pro is connected directly to the coils. the injectors are ID1000 high impedance.

ignition: the fuel pump switches on/off correctly in Output Test Mode Inj/spark (and switches +12v to coils correctly) and the ground connections to the coils are fine. clicking [start] for coils does nothing.

injectors: As per the coils, the +12v is correctly switched on by the fuel pump relay however the button for [start] in injector testing section does not light up so i cant even click that one.

scope testing the signal from the ecu at the coils / injectors shows that nothing is happening in either case (+12v still ok there when fuel pump button is clicked).

in Output Test Mode I/O i can get the fuel pump to switch ok and [PWM Out2] and [Tacho] work as expected.

i haven't yet tried it with crank/cam input (cranking the engine).

don't know if its relevant but at the bottom of the tuner studio page the buttons for [spark cut] and [fuel cut] are lit up red - perhaps that's because there is no crank / cam signal?

msq file attached

There's your problem then - you haven't fulfilled the requirements to use test mode.
You need zero RPM (on stim.)
Test mode on.
Injector mode selected.
Pulsewidth > 0.
Number of pulses > 0.

Hi James, thanks for your assistsance,

Im not using a stim so rpm is indeed zero. i now see that the pulsewidth is zero for injections but are you saying that the pulsewidth for injectors must be greater than zero otherwise there will be no functionality of the coils in test mode as well?

(sorry - im not near the car / ecu at the moment but always near a computer!)

right - changed injector pulse width to 5ms and the injector test works fine now.

still no signals from ecu for sparks however - what to try next?

thanks for the assistance

What type of coils?

You do realise that MS3-Pro drives logic coils only? You need an ignitor for high-current coils.

Hi James, yes - they are toyota yaris coils which are logic level. in any event during the coil test phase i had them unplugged and was scoping the ignition out leads from the harness with a 1k ohm load to ground.

i have tested all 4 ignition wires back to the ecu connector and they are fine.

are there any further settings in Tuner Studio which i have not correctly set or is there a possibility that the ignition drivers are faulty in the ecu (its new)

You can use output test mode (with the coils disconnected) to confirm the output hardware is working. On current firmware, the spark outputs produce 0 volts when turned on and 5 volts when turned off.

Hi Matt - thanks for your help.

I'm working on it right now and if i change the settings in TS for ignition option / Wheel decoder for Spark output, depending upon which way i set these (Going low or Going high) the spark outputs sit either 0v or 5v awaiting the starting of Coil testing in output test modes - is that what you mean?

i believe the above test confirms there are no wiring errors between ecu and coils. spark output wires just sit at their predetermined values +5 / zero - all four are showing the same symptoms. the spark out wires are currently grounded via 1k resistors to simulate load

i still haven't tried it with crank / cam input

Post a screen-shot of the "test mode" screen when you are trying to get a spark (or spark output).

Re: MS3Pro - No spark or fuel in test mode - now with video!

Post by dexion7 »

Hi,

i made a short you tube video linked to below.

there is a 1k resistor loading the yellow (spark out A) to ground. if the going high is changed to going low in ignition settings the quiescent state of the spark outputs are all changed between 0v and +5 as expected.

I can't see anything immediately wrong with your tune or your video.

I'd suggest installing the current firmware and re-loading your MSQ. Perhaps some hidden setting is corrupted? (I can't think of anything else right now.)
Also try "Coil testing mode" as "One" instead of "Sequence"

Hi James, I have tried One and Sequence and neither work.

do i need to download the firmware from diyautotune - its an MS3pro?

The current firmware is 1.4.0. Download it from the Downloads link above or from ms3pro.com

Hi James - I've reloaded firmware and msq to no avail. in fact i've done it twice but the results are just the same:

in the ignition setup changing from going high to going low toggles the quiescent state of the spark outputs but cant get the ecu to drive them in test mode. injector drivers work fine, just as before

Re: MS3Pro - No spark - reloaded firmware - no change

Post by dexion7 »

Fixed!

although I'd reloaded firmware and then the msq it had made no difference.

i copied someone else's msq from this forum and loaded that and the coils worked fine in test mode.

then replaced that msq with my own one and it also worked. (As per James' advice)

thanks to all who helped

It seems that the problem here was overboost set to 100kPa. (i.e. 100kPa absolute = 0psi boost)
