MS3 v3.57 Issue

Post by 2JZE36M3 »

Hello,

First, here is my configuration currently

2jz-ge
7m CPS
GTE Crank Sensor
LQ9 coils
1200cc injectors
MS3 v3.57 w/ MS3x expansion board
Using all DIY harnesses for the engine
36-2 wheel

We are not using a secondary trigger as we are trying to get the car running and inspected in a batch fire configuration. Here is the issue..

The car will not rev over 2800rpm. It sounds like there is a limiter there, but all limiters are turned off. We have checked the resistance of the sensor, it is within spec. We have installed a 10k 1/4W resistor in the vr+ wire (using the DIY harness, so this is shielded). The car seems to run alright under 2800rpm, but it does not rev beyond ~2800rpm. We have turned the pots on the board ccw and adjusted them cw some.

I have attached the datalog from today and the current tune in the car. as it sat idling and a free rev. Please let me know what you see/think!

Have you flowed the injectors (with your drivers) for rate and dead-time? When req_fuel is that low (2.8ms), getting those correct is going to be crucial.

I have the flow test results for them from the manufacturer. They are brand new.

Alas, data from the manufacturer is not very reliable, since they didn't use your fuel system and injector drivers. I think you will be wasting your time fussing with the CKP sensor (or anything else) until you have correct injector parameters.

Over the weekend we spent a considerable amount of time troubleshooting more, but have not found a solution. Here is what we have tried:

-removed 10k resistor from VR+
-tried several other resistor sizes, which didn't change anything
-tried a 1k shunt on the VR wires (car wouldn't start)
-moved the coil ground away from the other grounds
-confirmed base timing it set correctly along with tooth angle
-verified the resistance of the sensor to be within spec
-endlessly adjusted pots R56 and R52

Where we stand:
-all noise filtering is turned off
-no inline resistor on vr+
-no shunt
-pots adjusted and we are seeing 34 teeth in the log (adjusting R56 got us from 35 teeth to 34)
-no sync loss
-no sync loss reason (even after sitting at this 'limiter' for a few seconds)

We were able to make the car rev worse with a couple of configurations, but nothing got us any more rpm out of the car.

Here is the current log, composite log, and msq:

Please check if your timing is still correct at 2800 RPM.

Did you want me to fix the timing and check that it doesn't change as I rev it? Or...?

That's the easiest way to do this.

I still don't understand... why such a focus on the triggering when no sync-loss is being logged? Do check that the ignition isn't drifting with rpm, of course, but virtually any spark advance from -10 to +50 should let it free-rev past 2800; I doubt that is the problem.

We are going to check ignition timing with rpm. We are not really looking into the triggering anymore. We were still seeing sync loss up until about 4pm yesterday but we are not any more so we are moving to look at something else. We were also not getting the proper number of teeth for most of yesterday, so there was an issue there..emphasis on was.

We are working through this step by step. If there is not a timing issue as the rpm increases then we can check that box and move to something else.

I think you have only posted two run logs (MSL), and neither shows any sync-loss. What did I miss? If you have had sync problems, why didn't you post a log showing some? I apologize if it seems like I am griping at you, but forums like this are very much a "garbage-in-garbage-out" proposition. Giving complete and accurate info is the best way for you to get the help you want.

I did have sync loss issues. For whatever reason with the settings in the first post the sync loss didn't show up immediately. I didn't realize that when I posted that log. I noticed this a couple of days ago. We have had sync loss issues until the tune/log that I posted last night. I have been getting a lot of help offline from some friends who happen to be very handy with MS stuff so that is why I didn't post before last night.

As it turns out the mechanical timing of the motor is off considerably. I didn't build this motor but I had faith that the builder would have timed it correctly but that was wrong unless my brand new tensioner and gates belt jumped timing. Either way I need to retime it and we will get back to it.

I appreciate you being blunt. I have not done this before on this forum so I am not all the familiar with what you guys need to see.

The vvti gear has two sets of timing marks which the builder was unaware of and so the wrong set of marks was used. The builder is a standup guy and noticed the issue when we talked last night. So hopefully I can retime it and it will let us rev out and get to tuning!

Engine is retimed and reassembled. We needed a 10k inline on the vr+ wire as expected. The car revved out to 7k and we went out and seated the rings with some boost pulls!

Fourth pull into tuning. 20ish pounds, only 10 degrees of timing. I cannot tell you how happy I was to feel boost in it tonight. It felt amazing!!
