Serial cable?

Serial cable?
I need to make an extension cable to get the serial connector out to the dash, does the MS use a strait through cable? no pin swapping like many serial cables.
Also does the ms need all 9 pins hooked up? if not which pins does it use?
Thanks

Everything I'm finding online shows 2,3 and 5 hooked up strait through. I'm proceeding with this.

Re: Serial cable?
You only need a twin screened cable for the serial connection to MS. The MS connector does have 5v present too - but it's not needed here with my serial to USB converter.
Decent balanced microphone cable (XLR) is a good choice - robust and flexible.

Re: Serial cable?
Ok thanks,
I'm using a 3 conductor shielded cable I have on the shelf. Should I ground the shield and if so on which end MS or car.

Re: Serial cable?
It is a straight connection, not crossed ("null modem").
I don't think it has to be shielded, but I would do that at the MS end, only.

Re: Serial cable?
Only pins 2,3,5 are needed.

Re: Serial cable?
Thanks guys, it's tested and working, now on to the next thing on the list...
Re: Serial cable?
I'm using the screen as the ground with twin screened. I'd do the same with three core and screen - just ignore one of the three. There's not the same ground loop problems you could have with a screen on a sensor cable.bpimm wrote:Ok thanks,

Re: Serial cable?
I'd terminate screen and ground wire to MS end. Also good idea to include pin 9 which is used for Bluetooth power. Nice to have phone or tablet running Shadow dash in cab. I'm yet to get mine working but have a few hints should you need.
