Crank trigger Wheel: Minimum Tooth Heigth

Post by DonMaximo »

I want to relocate my 36-1 crank trigger wheel and this will require, in the least, shortening the tooth height by 0.128" or more.

How short can a tooth be -AND- still functioning consistently ??

I'll be using the 3-wire Hall effect crank sensor sold by DIYAUTOTONE

Remind me: Was the sensor to tooth gap = 0.04" ??

Thank you

How high will the teeth be? A height of .080" should be OK (wingin' it here...), and a closer gap should help. With near-zero run-out, which you should shoot for since you are trimming the OD anyway, and decent crank bearings, gap can get down to .005-.010" with no problem. Even though the OD may be perfect, pay attention to "run-out" of the tooth root, variation in the tooth height matters.

DIY has the specs on their sensors on the website, if not the actual datasheets. You didn't say if you had the red threaded sensor or the tabbed / flanged black sensor; I'm assuming you don't have the older silver threaded sensor.

The red sensor:

Code: Select all

Nominal air gap: 1.5 mm
Recommended tooth size is a rectangle measuring at least 2.5 mm x 6.35 mm, with a 5.0 mm tooth height.
The black sensor:

Code: Select all

Maximum air gap: 5 mm
The trigger wheel must be at least 2 mm wide, the teeth and gaps at least 2 mm wide, and the gaps at least 2 mm deep.
Temporarily shut down - back soon!
