New red crank sensor set up

Post by Bob Pendleton »

Hello guys. I am having trouble figuring what to do next. I had the flanged black crank sensor, but it died and I now have the new red sensor installed, powered by VREF, approx .070 in from a 36-1 crank toothed wheel, on GM 4.3L v-6 running a MS3/3X, software MS3 1.4.0; TS MS 2.6.14. It is a boat,if that makes a difference.
Attached are msq and datalogs.
I think the polarity of the sensor needs to be changed, but I cannot see any difference in the datalogs.
I was thinking of reducing the gap to about .040 in to start with.
Noise filtering does not seem to help.
Thanks,Bob Pendleton

Yes, I did install a 1K resister across the signal and Vcc wire. Thanks, Bob.

I changed the sensor to 12V and get some better results.
I will try to run today.
Does polarity of sensor look right?
Thanks, Bob.

I run them on falling edge and around 2mm gap.

I am still having problems with my crank sensor signal.
I have tried both 12V and 5V, close to wheel and far away, adjusted the pots and I still cannot get the ECU to see the sensor.
Latest logs are attached.
Does anyone have an opinion on the sequence of setting up procedures?

Current settings are R56 3CW and R52 6CCW( or zero setting). I get a comp and tooth pattern but the tooth pattern looks weird.
Thanks for all the input.

Well the sensor is definitely not seeing all of the teeth. I haven't ever used one of the new threaded body sensors but the old ones needed the tightest gap I could give them to work consistently. When setting the pots, you may wish to try the alternate method as describe in the manuals. R52 fully CCW, turn it at least 8-10 full turns to make sure its correct and set R56 by measuring the voltage at the top of R54 ( next to it) you want 2.5V.

Thanks, I will try moving sensor closer and setting voltage per the manual. Bob.

IT RUNS!!!
Thanks to prof315 and elturbonitroso for the feed back and help!
I had hit a brick wall mentally and the feedback helps.
I did not realize how critical the exact voltage needed to be set at.
Again thanks, and on to testing and tuning. Bob Pendleton.
