Old school Ford Alternator wiring

Post by Dgus »

I am hoping to have my ms3pro regulate the alternator output. I have a 80’s style ford alternator that has an external regulator. The alternator has two wires, battery and field. From what I understand as the voltage to the field terminal increases the output of the alternator increases. When I read up in the Ms3pro manual, I am not sure if it is able to produce a variable output that I can wire to the field terminal. My question is has someone been able to use the Ms3Pro and an 80’s ford alternator and if so how did they wire it and what settings to use. Thanks in advance

That sounds like Chrysler alternators.

Wiring would be similar to MS3X/V357, see here:

I'd want to see an internal diagram of the alternator.

Thanks for the responses. I still am a little confused. The Link to the Chrysler use three terminals. I am only using two. Battery and field. Also I thought all the high current outputs where grounds. That they are basically ment to control the ground on a relay ie cooling fan, or ground to an injector. If I where to power the field through a relay it would be either on or off not variable.

Any idea of the resistance of the field coil?

See the next page in the manual for high-side control. The output is pulsed. I've personally bench-tested the Chrysler configuration.
