MS3X new build issue, won't start

Post by gholsopple »

Hi there.
new megasquirt user, new build. miata 1992, naturally aspirated.
MS3x, firmware MS3 1.4.1 release 20160421
Serial Signature: MS3 format 0524.05

RPMs not coming up. Cycles from 175 to 0 over and over.
A video of the run showing the symptom is at:
https://youtu.be/gsb4ejoGqYM

Built the megasquirt based on the build instructions at https://trubokitty.com/#/ms3xassembly
Purchased the suggested kit from diyautotune per this same site.

Basically i have a jimstim driving the megasquirt. It isn't in the car yet.
Tested the jimstim and the RPMs LED's light relative to the pot dial.

The log of the symptom, current msq and an image of the build is attached. The tune is based on the tune for my car, downloaded both the firmware and the msq (90-93 MS3x Basemap) from https://trubokitty.com/#/tune

I have audited the components several times. Even validated against: http://westfieldmx5.sgrkempen.be/ms3/90-97-ms3/ I have also gone through all the solders and rewetted just in case.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch.

Have you read the actual manuals?

I guess i'll take that as an answer that i need more education. I will do a deeper read.
Thanks for the insight.

I'll add my take on it. Your PCB build is very incomplete. I'm not saying it can't work like that for your specific application, but it is tough for me to correlate what you have there to what is standard. It would take some of questions and "reverse engineering" for me to understand what you have, and how it works. I would probably have to go into those linked-to instructions and learn the specifics.

Why go through the bother, either me or you? If the PCB is built complete and standard, it is capable of handling most any engine. I think you got led off "into the weeds" with this and should finish the PCB and start anew with that.

Need a composite log to diagnose lack of RPM signal, not an MSL. But, if you look at the MSL, you have a sync error code of 38. That means you aren't getting cam signal. Your cam signal is on the MS3x connector.. you only have the stim connected to the MS3 connector. There's a chance that this MS3x is perfectly fine to start the vehicle. If all your sensors are reacting to the stim properly, you were able to load firmware and have no other errors, why not try to install into the car?

Edit: also as noted above, this is a unique build since you used Braineack's instructions instead of the MS3 manual. This is fine, because it's what most Miata MS3x's are built to, but most of the guys here aren't familiar with it. You'd be better off contacting Brain directly or heading over to miataturbo.net (as long as you know how not to act like a noob).

Thanks for the feedback. Very helpful.

The first reply helped me the most. That reply was RTFM.
After reading the manual more, i realized i wasn't sending the cam signal to the MS3x connector as aceduce802 mentioned.
After setting that up, the stim is running the MS correctly and it is starting up in tuner studio.
I now have more reading to do to understand the rest of what the MS is capable of and how to controll my car.

I am new this world. I am attempting to not be a noob, but noobs usually don't know when they are a noob...

thanks for the help.
