Got dyno tuned, but power is down from before MS3Pro install

Post by DLRacing »

My car will be going on the dyno for final tuning in a week or so. :D
I need a decent knock sensor setup before the dyno session.
Has anyone enabled knock sensing on an aluminum LS motor, using the LS3 type sensors on each side of the block?
If so, I'd love to know what parameters you set to get it to work properly.
I have a 7-liter LS3 stroker with an MS3Pro.

Thanks in advance,
David

Oh, come on, NO-ONE is using their knock sensor capability with their MS3?

I really have no idea where to start for a decent knock setup on one of these engines.

I'd start by using the frequency calculator here:

http://www.phormula.com/KnockCalculator.aspx

Then make a dyno pull with a very cautious spark table for a baseline. Log the knock levels and set a threshold that's around 25% higher for a starting point.

Thanks Matt.
I found that calculator earlier.
My bore is 4.070", or 103.378mm, which works out to 5.6khz resonant frequency.
Should I set the knock frequency to the fundamental resonant freq? Some threads I've read said to use the 2'nd harmonic to reduce interference from valvetrain noise.

I hope to get it to the tuner next Monday.
If it quits raining next weekend  , I'll set the frequency and enable the knock sensing, and take it for a drive to get some idea what to expect, before I take it to the dyno.

Thanks again,
David

Both approaches can work. I'd see how high the reading is at both the fundamental frequency and double that, and go with which one has lower noise levels.

Matt,

I just pulled 3 degrees timing from everything above 1200rpm, and set my knock sensors threshold at 50%.
I also made sure knock was being logged. I'm going to take it for a drive and see what kind of values I get from the knock sensors.

I'll post the results this evening.

Following this one closely. I have the 6.2L with dual knock and will be firing the motor in the next month. If you get yours set correctly, it would be helpful if you don't mind sharing your settings.

I need all the help I can get. :)

Set Knock Thresholds to 50% and made a test run. (Zipped log too big to upload.)
It showed knock active under any kind of heavy throttle, pulled timing and ran like crap, as expected.

With the reduced timing advance, my oil temp also went higher than normal, which I think is due to the oil temp sensor being close to the left header. I've suspected the oil temp was reading abnormally high for that reason anyway.

Another old problem has cropped up though. My oil and fuel pressure gauges are cycling between the actual reading and 0 very fast. It looks like it may be the processor is getting overwhelmed and misreading the inputs.
I had this problem before and it mysteriously went away, now it's back again. :?:

Any ideas on why my pressure inputs are reading all flaky???
I'll attach the last log and tune where they were normal on the next post.

Logs and tune attached.

Last log and tune where pressure inputs read correctly.

I cant see where any of the tune changes between these two tunes should affect the pressure sensors whatsoever. :?

If I can get this working, I'll be glad to help out any way I can.
I sure wish someone who has figured this out would chime in here though.

Before I park it today, I'm going to disable the knock sensors again, with no other changes, and see if that's what's affecting my pressure sensors.
If so, maybe DIY can come up with a fix for the problem before my dyno day.

in knock sensor settings debug data is turned on this writes data to generic sensor chanels and is used for advanced trouble shooting

I just tried it with knock sensors disabled, and the pressure sensors work normally again, then I saw this post. :?
I assumed I needed the debug data on to log the KS data. Is this not true?
I'll try it again with the debug data off and see what happens. I suspect you're right, and that's the source of the interference.

(I really need to get a cheap tablet to tune on, so I don't have to lug my laptop out to the car every time.)

Thanks,

Ashford: Thanks, you were right, it was the debug data being turned on that was causing it. :)

I'd appreciate that. Thanks for the schematics you sent me. I still have a couple sensors to figure out, but at least I'm closer.

I had to cancel the dyno session.
I backed the car out to go fill it with fuel, and noticed the wideband readings were way lean at idle, so lean it shouldn't even be running, so I decided to recal them.
After the recal procedure, both sensors returned E* error code, indicating bad sensor, so it looks like it ate ANOTHER pair of sensors.
(I wonder if the Bosch sensors are that fragile, or is the Innovate gauge running them outside their normal parameters?)
Anyway, I ordered another pair, and will reschedule the dyno when I get them installed.

Later,
David

Also make sure the Innovate controllers are running on the latest firmware; it included some heater control updates to improve temperature control.

Do you know what's involved to install the update from Innovate?

I had to go out of town for a few days, so haven't been able to get back to it yet.

Thanks,
