Triumph Daytona 675R with MegaSquirt 3 (Cam Troubles)
Hey Guys, heres the specs of my setup so far.
Make: Triumph
Model: Dayton 675r
Year: 2014
Cylinders: 3
Firing order: 1-2-3
Toothed, 24-2 CCW
#1 tooth is 52.5° ATDC
ECU: Megasquirt 3 with MS3X expansion card.
Sensors: coolant temp, oil pressure, O2, throttle position, and air intake temp.
Crank-position sensor: VR Sensor
Cam position sensor: none
Ignition: C.O.P. (tested using test function in TunerStudio)
Fuel: stock 330cc injectors (tested using test function in tunerstudio)
Problem is:
As it says here in the Megasquirt 3 Setting up manual (page 38 here http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/Megasqui ... Up-1.5.pdf):
"Three Cylinders:
Four stroke even fire
"Trigger wheel" required. With a crank wheel alone, "Wasted Spark" should be set and three coils will fire
every 120 degrees.
With the addition of a cam trigger or a trigger wheel running at cam speed, true COP is possible, firing every
240 degrees. "
How do I accomplish this without a Cam sensor or "Cam trigger". If i cannot accomplish this without this, then how can I set one up?
This is for a Formula SAE car btw!
Thanks,
-John

i was under the impression that odd cylinder counts, 3 or 5 ect needed a cam signal to work.
1990 bmw 320i daily driver with m20b25 ms3 sequential fuel, 380cc injectors, d585 coil near plug, home made cam sync, launch control, fan control, vss, homebrew egt logging what's next????

Yeah, I'm puzzled too. It would seem that wasted spark in the intake stroke (for 3-cyl) would be a problem. The other every-120* sparks are in strokes where it won't matter, but that intake stroke???

Yeah, there is definetly not CAM signal coming out of the engine at all. Even looking at the wiring diagrams for the bike theres no CAM sensor. Not sure what else to do.
Could i possibly set the ecu up as a 6 cylinder work?
Thanks,
-john

If you do that, you will need to change the ignition and injection wiring as if your firing order were 1-3-2 instead of 1-2-3.deadlyjohny wrote:Could i possibly set the ecu up as a 6 cylinder work?

I peeked at pictures of that engine, my perception is it would be fairly easy to add a cam sensor to the cam-cover. Do you have any fabrication capabilities?

Maybe change one of the cam gear retaining bolts over to a stud and nut so the stud is long enough to trigger a sensor but the other shorter bolt does not.
Find the Manuals up top under Quick links: Manuals.

Ya'll make it sound easy. I'm up for anything realitively easy. Have any recommendations on what cam sensor to use? Also, using this setup, how would I setup TunerStudio for this?

If I did this, would the wiring have to be different, or could I accomplish this in tunerstudio?racingmini_mtl wrote:If you do that, you will need to change the ignition and injection wiring as if your firing order were 1-3-2 instead of 1-2-3.deadlyjohny wrote:Could i possibly set the ecu up as a 6 cylinder work?

I said wiring because that's what is needed. You need to physically change the wiring because the order cannot be changed in Tunerstudio.deadlyjohny wrote:If I did this, would the wiring have to be different, or could I accomplish this in tunerstudio?racingmini_mtl wrote:If you do that, you will need to change the ignition and injection wiring as if your firing order were 1-3-2 instead of 1-2-3.deadlyjohny wrote:Could i possibly set the ecu up as a 6 cylinder work?

This shouldn't be a problem. Any other issues you could foresee before I go ahead and try this?racingmini_mtl wrote: I said wiring because that's what is needed. You need to physically change the wiring because the order cannot be changed in Tunerstudio.
