MS3 Wiring Concerns (Shift Cut + Clutch Safety Switch)

Post by goodysgotacuda »

I have this wired on my car as shown and have not put power to the ECU or Starter Relay yet. I have some concerns, if I were to hit the ignition switch without depressing the clutch, will the 12v applied to the starter relay find a ground through the ECU Pin Grey Pin#9[AND FRY SOMETHING!?]

Asking another way, will the red swtiched 12v seek ground through the purple wire and ECU?

Yes it probably will. You should be able to fix that by using a diode in your wiring between the switch and the ECU. Something like a very common 1N4001 with the "band" end pointing towards the switch.

Better might be to install a second switch to keep the two systems independent. For launch or flat-shift, you will need an adjustable switch so you can set the activation point. I use a pull-type motorbike brake-light switch on a little bit of chain so I can adjust it.

Thanks for the input. I'll look to add a diode, this kept me up last night!

I have the switch set just as the clutch moves and is adjustable. It will be a little premature for a clutch safety switch, but I at least have to have my foot on the clutch for it to crank

I'm not sure how common or needed the clutch safety switch is. It certainly isn't a standard item on UK cars, I've never had a car with one.

I don't really need it on a factory car, which they are all mandatory on in the US. But for a car I tweak on, it will help avoid me reaching through the window and bumping the key in gear, that never ends well.

I recall the day a certain racer (who really should have known better) forgot he had bypassed the clutch & neutral interlocks on his bike, and managed to send his ride off on a stroll through the paddock by itself. It wasn't a particularly LONG stroll, but it still amused the heck out of those of us standing by and watching!
