VVT stuck (MS3 pre-1.5.1 beta 1 firmware released)

Post by aidandj »

Please move this to the main MS3 support if needed. But I'm running beta 1 so I figure I would post it.

I've got something weird going on. VVT is getting "stuck". Not just the actual angle, but the target is getting stuck.

Tune is attached. Log was too big so here it is.

VVT Issues

Post by aidandj »

I posted this over in the beta section, but figured it would get more exposure here. Running 1.5.1 Beta 1.

VVT gets "stuck" the target flatlines (doesn't follow the map) and the angle also flatlines. This sends the duty cycle high, and the car runs like it is fully advanced.

Then when it gets "unstuck" you can see that it was up at max advance when it was stuck.

And then a second post for a different issue. Related to knock. Cylinder 1 knock seems to follow the VVT angle. Not the duty cycle of the solenoid, but the actual cam angle.

Image

This is causing a lot of false noise. Its weird how its just on cylinder 1.

Figured out the second issue. Gain on cylinder 1 was 1. the rest were .5. Dropped that gain. will retest.

First issue is still a problem.

Got some better logs. VVT table changed but here it is:

Image

The log is full of artifacts like these. Where the target, duty, and angle get stuck. And the PID algorithm winds up, and it spikes when it comes back.

I'm not even sure where to start.

I made a thread for it here: http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 31&t=66104

But something is definitely acting up. I tried to revert to 1.5 but another bug kept me from doing that. Might try 1.4.1 today.

Any ideas or suggestions? I'm trying to get to the dyno later this week and would like to go with VVT.

Another spot from the log in the first post.

The VVT table for this log was the following:

Image

At this marker (86kpa, 3100rpm) it should be targeting 19* of advance. But it is stuck at 3.1*

Image

A few seconds later it should be targeting below 1*. And its still stuck at 3.1*

Image

I'm stumped.

Went out and got more logs. I have no idea whats going on. But its totally broken.

Here you can see it stuck, not following the table at all.

And then I went and tested some duty cycles. Its reading the cam angle wrong too.
Target angle is stuck. So is cam angle
I send Duty cycle to 50%, and a few seconds later it gets unstuck

Are more datalogs needed. Or any other tests? Anything that can easily be changed?

Got a really good log of the issue tonight. Here's a video showing the error.

I replaced C13 on MS3x with a .001uF cap and now VVT is working fine
