Wrong Tooth Angle with DIY Nissan Wheel

Post by BlackBird_SR71 »

Helping a fellow Z member out with with his 280ZX Turbo motor. MS-3 with Single coil distributor and using DIY 24 +2 Trigger wheel.

Default setting for this wheel is 345 degrees. After synching timing this usually ends up around 355 to 360 degrees, depending on Diztributor lock down position. There is some physical adjustment available for rotor phasing.

On these trigger settings the #1 Tooth angle is set to 180 degrees. What effect, if any, would this setting have on engine. Car does run, but has not had final tuning.

Edit: Screenshot of Trigger Options attached. Your thoughts? TIA

If the Trigger Wheel was installed upside down, would this change the #1 Tooth angle. Also, would it affect the Ignition Capture edge.

To add further confusion. MS-3 shows Ignition Capture Edge as Rising. Where as MS2 ( and MS-1 ) show Ignition Capture edge as Falling. Both 3.57 boards. Curious as to why the difference?

Have you strobed your timing to verify the tooth#1 angle?

Is the l28 distributor like the KA24E splined to the oil pump? If so it may be off a tooth.

Yes. Strobed and Synched properly

Final tuning is dnow done. We've put this to rest as the engine runs fine with Tooth #1 angle 180 degrees out. Doesn't run at all with " correct " settings in TS. ( I've tuned several of these vehicles and all but this one used around 360 degrees ). Conclusion is that Dizzy or Trigger wheel was installed 180 degrees out. Could be rectified, but as engine is running fine now... owner doesn't want to mess with it. Fair enough. 8)
