VG30E 85 Maxima

Post by vern_k »

I'm working on putting in MS in my 1985 Nissan Maxima 5 speed, engine is a VG30E.

equipment I have:

MS3V3.57 with MS3X and knock sensor module installed
air temp sensor

Right now my main questions:

CPS: should I fallow the instructions for the RB and VG30DE and use the 1k ohm pull up off the TPS 5V out (pin 26) or the 330 ohm as it states in the hardware manual?

Spark: I should be able to use the coil out put off of the MS3 (pin 36) for signal or will I want to use spark A (pin 14) on the MX3 to trigger my coil with a the a transistor using a single coil and rotor?

Check the trigger discs. Does this one have one long and five short, or are the holes all different sizes? The RB pattern is all different sizes.

I'd use spark output A to trigger the power transistor.

This is currently only supported in basic trigger mode.

However, it could be supported.

To the original poster. Any chance you could take a composite log for me.

from what I understand the high rez is supported i.e. VG30DETT, SR20.... don't have it hooked up yet but will be working on it this weekend and have the full version of tunerstudio, and plan on data logging signals while testing everything as I go, I will post them when I figure out how to.... but yea for right now just using the sequential fuel and single coil for now, it's my daily driver so just need it back on the road and will more then likely add coil packs later...

Got the CPS hooked up and tested, log from the test, there is a gap at the beginning due to time between hitting start and getting to the drill that I used to turn the distributor

I had a look, the hi-res signal isn't being logged. My mistake in the instructions. For this test you'll need to connect the hi-res input to the MS3X cam input temporarily. Return to PT4 afterwards.

I was wondering about that, so I am connected to the cam input (32) but I should be running it on PT4 and not use the cam input?

ok so I see what I did, in my original notes I had it for PT4, but then did some more reading and read about the wiring for switching to the DYI trigger disk that uses the cam input and when I was wiring last night I seconded guessed my notes and went with the cam input I will switch it tonight and log again to make sure.....

Normally a Nissan CAS with original trigger disc requires
low-res slots -> mainboard "crank" input
high-res slots -> PT4

For this logging exercise you need the high-res to the MS3X cam input because the composite logger doesn't look at PT4 in "log crank and cam".

If that's how you have it wired, make sure you have a pullup to 5V on the high-res input.

Normal wiring is in the manual:

yep have them both on pull up I might have a setting off that it's not looking for or seeing the hi rez, but yea had it on the cam input, or could it be I'm set for single coil? so it is just ignoring the hi rez?

Set "Log Crank and Cam" as the ignition mode.

ok and that would just be for logging, then when I know for sure it's seeing it go back to RB and move hi rez back to PT4 and move on to getting injectors hooked up?

I'll see about adding that, but it will be after the 1.5.1 release. (We really need to get that out very soon and I'd rather avoid any changes other than bugfixes at this time.)

I didn't try the crank and cam setting with it connected to PT4, if I pull my distributor back out for injector testing I will try to remember to check that, or once I get her up and running

The log you just provided has all the information I need to understand the CAS pattern.
