First Start

Post by MegaMicra »

Hi all. I've spent the last six months building and installing the MS3X kit into a 1.4 Nissan Micra 2001 k11. I know its a little overkill for this car, but hey, its been enjoyable.
I fired it up for the first time today, and to my amazement it started.
I've got it set up to run fully sequential and i'm using all the oem sensors and equipment. It appears to run incredibly rich and wouldn't rev. Unfortunately that's where my knowledge of tuning ends.
I'm just looking for a little guidance on getting it ticking over and running enough to drive it.
I've attached the msq file. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Jon

Are you able to capture a data log through the datalog menu?

Start the logging first, then start the car, then stop.

Thanks for the quick response Peter, i'll try and keep it going long enough to capture this info for you. It'll be tomorrow before i can get that data, as i'm out at the moment. Regards Jon.

Excellent. I'm looking to see if it syncs and whether it sees vacuum.

I do get full sync when I crank with no sync losses. I also did a composite and tooth log which also looked good, well, when I say looked good I mean they looked like the images in the setting up and hardware guides haha. Thanks again, and I get back with the info you want asap. Regards Jon.

Here are my datalogs you requested. They are labelled accordingly. i found that i could get the car to run a bit longer if i switched to wasted spark, to capture the logs. I just cant get it to idle correctly so its difficult to attempt anything. I had to tweak the warm up and after start enrichment to get it to run at all. If you need any more info just let me know. Regards Jon.

Here are also the tooth log and composite log files.
If i could just get it to idle id be happy.

The composite log looks good for a 60-2 with cam signal.

The regular log posted shows Sync error 2 Tooth at wrong time. That does not make sense to me. Was an ignition setting change at some point in this?

If you are still having issues change the first ignition setting to Cam and Crank log and then do a Composite log. Note that the motor will not start in this mode as it is just for trouble shooting.

Hi Andy, thanks for looking. I was messing a bit with all sorts just to try and get the engine to stay running long enough for a log. It hunts really badly when it does run, and never really gets out of the cranking phase as the idle keeps dropping so low. Ill try what youve said and redo a composite log. I didnt realise you could do this. Regards Jon.

P.S @Peter Florence , Thanks also for taking the time to have a look.

tooth log looks like you have the wrong capture edge try falling edge on 'ignition input capture' see if the tooth log clears up

Ok I'll look at that tomorrow. I'm at work at the moment. Thanks.

Edit: out of interest, and learning, how do you know this. What should I be looking for.

if you open the tooth log you have the long tooth indicating the missing gap? the shorter long one after the really long one shouldn't be there

I have seen that second tooth being a little tall several times. My bet is it has something to do with tooth spacing before the tooth one compared to the spacing to the following tooth. Just my guess....

Your capture edge setting is correct.

It does appear to be losing sync as RPM increases. I bet if you take a composite log under the same conditions as the wasted spark log, you'll see the sync loss.

I'd either increase the distance of sensor to wheel or rotate R56 clockwise a couple of turns (if V3.0 mainboard)

It is a V3.0 mainboard. It's the OEM Nissan sensor fitted on the side of the gearbox bellhousing and the teeth are on the flywheel, so I could always space it out. I'd rather keep it as OEM so I'll try that R56 tweak first. Is it clockwise I turn it.

What does R56 actually do.

Sets threshold level. If it's too low it can trigger on distortion during the missing tooth
