PCM ProBoss GT40 boatengine (Ford 351W)trigger wheel choices
I’m Mega-squirting a Boat Motor Pro Boss GT40 it’s a ford 351W 5.8l with GT40 heads.
The original setup is a TFI with Signature PIP and CCD and distributor
I’m trying to find the best choice of trigger wheel. This is pretty much a Ford Bronco engine. I noticed the Mustang and Bronco tuners put the wheel in front of the V-Belt pulley.
Because the engine housing get extremely close to it this option will not work for me.
1. Could I use a harmonic balancer from a 5.0 Explorer?
2. Should I use the DIY wheel and cut the center hole bigger? 3. I found a wheel on eBay but the diameter is a little smaller than the balancer wheel
Installation would look something like this: Question will the sensor get a clean reading being that close to the balancer?
Thanks Peter

It *might work like that, but to your point you can cut the hole larger. I had my 351w balancer hub machined down 1/8" to accommodate the wheel going between the balancer and the lower pulley.

Thanks,
your install is beautiful i must say, I just ordered a trigger wheel that has a 114mm hole and still is 6.5 in on the outside. I try to install it between pulley and balancer. The challenge is to get it centered perfect in the middle. If it does not work I definitely use your option and have the balancer machined down.
Where did you get mount for the crank sensor?
I post the results when I get the parts

Thank you. Yes, you definitely need it to be perfectly centered so you don't get any significant run-out. If you notice the top pic has a DIY Autotune wheel and the bottom is different, that's because I tried to fab up my own crank sensor mount and just could not get anything I liked and felt was rigid enough. I ended up buying a whole kit, minus the sensor from Redline Motorsports, it's very pricey, but very solid and very high quality.
Drats, looking just now it seems like it is no longer available from them, that's a shame.

Are you trying to make big power? A crank trigger is not necessary for mild set up.

Re: PCM ProBoss GT40 boatengine (Ford 351W)trigger wheel cho
sorry for the late response I got it working with a 36-1 wheel from a explorer, got the complete pulley with wheel for $20 on eBay. Was easy to pull the wheel of and installed it in the middle on my balanzer.
Now trigger and ignition works perfect I also converted to sequential fuel injection. Big difference specially in idle. Brian I'm shooting for some 350 HP not super high but had problems with the TFI / CCD setup it did not trigger correct. I posted the exact problem in another thread:

thanks

Raymond B what sensor are yo using with your wheel?

The stainless Cherry hall. Picked it up from Mouser.fntwisted1 wrote:Raymond B what sensor are yo using with your wheel?

can you give me a p/n. ive tried the red one from cherry with my 60-2 wheel and it wasn't happy at all.

It's the exact same sensor, but in a stainless body GS100502. Did you have the gap set correctly along with the correct resistor to match the supply voltage?fntwisted1 wrote:can you give me a p/n. ive tried the red one from cherry with my 60-2 wheel and it wasn't happy at all.

Re: PCM ProBoss GT40 boatengine (Ford 351W)trigger wheel cho
ok, thanks, I had it gapped at .035 and .045 and .055. and I had (I think) the 2k resistor. in it.

Re: PCM ProBoss GT40 boatengine (Ford 351W)trigger wheel cho
.060" (1.5mm) is the recommended gap. As for the resistor it's 1k for 5v and 2.4k for 12v supply voltage, just FYI.fntwisted1 wrote:ok, thanks, I had it gapped at .035 and .045 and .055. and I had (I think) the 2k resistor. in it.

thank you for your input. I will definitely try it again. I may pm you to get some more info when iget to it. now I'm using a vr sensor from electromotive.
