VVT setup/wiring issue
Hi. I have a Ford BA with a Barra 6cyl dohc with vvt and an MS3X V3.57.
I have control of fuel and ignition, I'm now trying to control the vvt, the wiring is completed but the vvt angle gauge reads rubbish.
I noticed that in the "Feature List Showing I/O Pins" The (VVT1 Input ---- Main Cam) was not highlighted.
I have this input connected to (Cam Input 32, dark green wire) which seemed the most logical as I could not find an input called Main Cam.
I thinking maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere, any help would be appreciated.
Cheers, Mark.

It took me a while to work out how to attach an MSQ file.
Cheers.

What does the pattern look like on the cam wheel?

The number of teeth needs to be the number of base teeth - imagine if they had started with a set of all equally spaced teeth and cut teeth off to achieve that pattern. This picture looks as if there had been six teeth but two are removed, as the existing teeth are on a 60 / 120 degree spacing. So you would set the number of teeth to six instead of four.

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
Hi Matt, I've Changed the setting to 6 teeth, however, the problem remains the same.
VVT1 angle gauge has no responce and VVT2 angle gauge jumps around all over the place.
Should the (VVT1 Input ---- Main Cam) in "Feature List Showing I/O Pins" be highlighted? becouse, it is not!
And have I picked the correct input wire (Cam Input 32, dark green wire)?
I've double checked the wiring again, all seems OK.
Cheers mark.

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
Can you post a composite log of what's going on?
VVT1 input is always the main cam input, so that may be why it's not showing up under the I/O pin list.
Also, you'll need to set up poll level mode for the second trigger, not rising edge.

Hi Matt
I changed settings to Pol Level Mode but still no change, here is the Composite log you asked for. hment]

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
It's only registering two of the four pulses.
For testing, try getting a composite log while cranking with spark mode set to Log Crank And Cam.

Hi Matt
I've tried a few different combinations of settings with no change to the VVT angle gaugues.
Here is the composite log, set to, Log crank & cam. Cheers.

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
After some extensive reading, I checked JP7 which was jumpered, so now that the jumper is removed I have a signal
but still can't get a steady reading from the gauge, again, I've tried different settings with no luck.
In test mode, 0%Duty flickers around 59 degrees and 100%Duty flickers from about 190-30 and back, I've tried entering the numbers in Min & max degree but the gauge is all over the place, I can here the engine change note so I know the cams are moving.
Here is the current composite logs And spark mode log crank & cam Cheers.

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
Hi Matt.
Is it possible the megasquart can see the tooth pattern but can't decipher it to send to the angle gauge?
if that was the case, is it feasible to cut say all but one tooth off the cam or replace one of the missing teeth?

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
fixing to start on this very engine with ms3x, my question is, on the ignition coil wiring,do the barra coils have igniters in the coils or are you using an external igniter/module to fire the coils? any info is greatly appreciated!

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
We've been working on this one by email - Mark, would you care to post an update on where you are with this one now? I think we had an accurate cam angle read and just needed to get the PID loop dialed in.

Re: VVT setup/wiring issue
i'm just starting on my setup, the engine is still on its way to me from down under, i had a look at his MSQ last night but was more worried about VVT tables themselves than the PID loop at the moment, since i haven't gotten the engine yet. i looked up a tune in HPTuners to get some cam numbers to look at, thinking they would be like the coyote engines but its totally different. i think i have a good starting point though compared to the stock tables, also the XR6 turbo barras are running a ton of timing up top at full boost. Aussies must have 98-100 octane fuel. if you need some screen shots of the tables, let me know and ill post them up for comparison.
That's why i posted about the coil packs, to see if i needed to get some external modules or if they had the built in igniters. i figure about 25 days left for it to get here +/- a few...
