Gold Box LS 24x Alternator issue PLEASE HELP

Post by BOOs10 »

Hello all!

I am new to the MS unit and the Forum so please bear with me!!

I purchased the Plug and play 24x goldbox kit with map and injectors.. 04 5.3 in s10- 4 wire alt.

I got everything hooked up and idling pretty good. I noticed my wideband gauge started to stray from my AFR on screen. Checked the voltage at the battery and it wasnt charging.... I looked st the alternator and realized there was nothing plugged into the reg. (not included in harness) I started to look at the manual and got confused, again im a newb. I called EFI SOURCE and was told the following.

Get a pigtail for the alt. (I ordered an ls swap 1 wire pigtail for my application.
I was told to get a 470 OHM 1/2 watt resister and tie that between the wire coming out of the pigtail and a 12v switched source for a 13.xx to 14.xx constant charge. I was told to leave the alternator controls alone...

*note- Alternator charge lug goes to master cutoff switch to rear of truck then to battery
- battery in bed is grounded to frame directly below 0 gauge
- frame is grounded to block up front (large wire)
- MS harness is grounded to back of block (not same as frame) along with wideband ground
- large MS power wire is directly to battery

I HAVE NOT MESSED WITH ANY CHARGE SETTINGS IN TUNER STUDIO

Now... Cold start, with alternator pigtail hooked up as listed above runs good for a few seconds with good voltage at battery then idle goes to crap and dies. Unhook the pigtail from 12v key on and starts right back up and idles fine again. If I put the pigtail wire back on it dies after a sputter....

This is very frustrating what am I missing?? Sorry for the essay but I am just trying to be clear. My name is Dustin and would greatly appreciate some help to get this thing on the road

For the four wire alternator you don't need ECU control, just the 470R resistor or lamp.

That is how the alt gets hooked up and the engine won’t run. AFR leans way out and engine dies. If the alt. Wire (L) terminal is removed from a 12 v ig source (verified key on- running) everything runs fine. Reviewed that manual last night and the very page you posted, that’s what is being tried...

Once i figure out how i will. I’ve never data logged but i will and submit thanks. Just a stock 5.3 with the base tune tweaked a bit for the larger injectors

Figured this out with the help again from EFI Source. Turns out with the vehicle running (no charge wire) it was just the right amount of voltage to poorly operate the overkill 80lb injectors. When they received 14.2 volts they were flooding the 5.3. Installed 33lb inj. and the vehicle runs great..go figure!

So are you going to adjust the injector deadtime to the 80's back in there?
