Remote SD card

Post by MegaMicra »

I've tried a couple of sd card extenders as my MS3X is buried behind the dashboard and not easy to get to. All come back with sd error when I plug in the sd card to the extension . They work fine in my laptops and the sd card also works fine on it own in the Megasquirt. Has anyone got anything like this working.

It is unlikely to work reliably. The signals to the SDcard are not designed to be exposed to the harsh automotive environment.

Are you not able to download datalogs successfully ?

i do this myself alot. you cannot insert the card with the ms on, it needs to be in when it is keyed on. the extension trips a physical switch in the socket and if the switch says it is in but there is no card it errors out and stays that way. it needs a new boot up to work

The datalogging works absolutely fine James when I have an sd card in the MS3X unit itself. I have no issues at all. I just wondered why it didn't work with sd extender leads like these.

I just couldn't get it to work whichever way I tried. It's not a big issue, I just wanted to be able to access the sd card without removing parts of my dashboard. My car isn't a race car so all the trim is fitted.

That was my point. The SDcard signals (SPI) are ok inside the MS3 case, but outside the case in a cable, who knows. It wasn't designed to work like that and will be at risk of interference or damage to the card or ECU.

As I said before though, aren't you able to use the SDcard downloader?

Sorry, didn't see that last bit you asked.
Yes I can use sd card downloader. I know it's not supposed to be used like this, it was just something I decided to try as I had a spare extender. Like I said, it's no big issue I just like experimenting, if I didn't I'd never have put the MS3X in my £200 Nissan Micra haha.

One of the "eye-fi" wifi enabled SD cards might work...

Never thought of them. It's really not a problem tbh. My car isn't a race car. It's just a modding hobby one. Therefore the more things on show the better when ppl have a look round. I just wanted my Megasquirt stuff to be more apparent without having the whole unit on show. Thanks for the input though.

James is absolutely right... the signals going to the SD card don't "travel well".

But it can work sometimes. I've been doing it for a while, with an extender very much like the one linked above, although mine has a shorter cable (about 10") which may be important. I also have "SD comms speed" under the SD datalogging menu set to "Slower"... if I increase it, I have problems.

The SD downloader works for me but is impractical... I don't download files very often so when I do, it takes hours to download them all.
