coil near plug no spark
I’m trying to convert from EDIS8 to coil near plug. Did all the wiring and changed values in TS. I’m just not getting a spark no matter which coil!!
Got the wiring harness and connector with pigtails from EFI Connection. What I have not done yet is removing the VR signal wires from the EDIS connector and wiring it to the MS3. Don't know at the moment which pin to use.... Need help there to!! Do I have to change anything inside my MS3X to activate +5V from MS3??
You can see what I changed in my MSQ
Thanks

Re: coil near plug no spark
What coils are you using? What I really want to know is if they have built-in drivers/ignitors?
Re: coil near plug no spark
LS2 D585 coils and yes they have built in drivers/ignitors

Re: coil near plug no spark
I assume the coils don't fire in test-mode, correct? Do you see any AC voltage at the MS3X spark outputs (coils must be connected to provide a pull-up for the MS3X output)? Or, use a resistor in place of the coil and look for "static" DC voltage toggling using the outputs test. I gotta ask... there is constant 12V supply to the coils when trying to fire in test-mode? Can you fire a coil by manually connecting/disconnecting its input to 5V?
Re: coil near plug no spark
First off, thanks for trying to help me!!!
I noticed after closing TS and later on opening TS again, TS opened a window and showed me this.
The following error was reported by MegaSquirt:
COP set, but crank speed trigger wheel. Try wasted spark, install a cam trigger or mount your wheel on the cam.
I then tried wasted COP and I had a spark. Didn't know I can only run wasted spark. I know I don't have a cam wheel but I thought the crank wheel was enough to run COP.
Is there any way I can run CNP without a cam wheel??

Re: coil near plug no spark
Without a cam sensor to give engine phase, you can only run wasted spark.

That's really too bad it doesn't work out as I thought.
Want to thank both of you for helping me!!

Re: coil near plug no spark
Is this the C4, don't you have a dizzy (or the base of it) for driving the oil pump? It is pretty easy to get a cam signal from a dizzy.
PS: the only disadvantage to "wasted CNP" is the extra current draw, usually not too much of a problem.

Re: coil near plug no spark
Bill, no I don't have an opti spark or a distributor.
See if I can get the engine running today....

Re: coil near plug no spark
So, do you have dry sump, or is this not an SBC engine?
I'm thinking a sensor (Hall, in this case) could be fairly easily fitted to a valve cover to detect on rocker-arm or cam lobe.

Re: coil near plug no spark
Check out some exploded views of the LT1. The whole optispark and rear-driven water pump is unusual and not GM's finest hour.

Re: coil near plug no spark
After I connected the VR signal wires the engine fired right up without any problems. I do have to check timing, the engine sounds real crispy, could be to much pre ignition.
To LT1 engine: yes, the opti spark is pain in the a… I think I have 6 of them on the shelf, the most expensive one cost me $600. I then switched to MS3X running EDIS8 with 4 dual coils, was great but only lasted 3-4 years. After that EDIS just died out on me whenever it wanted to, shutting down the ignition anywhere between 4000-6800 rpm and retrieving everytime at exactly 3100 rpm.
This is why I swapped to CNP hoping to stop the ignition shutdown.
The water pump is gear driven, never had problems and really runs great even with my 397ci and about 580hp. To gain another 7 hp I tried several electr water pumps (Meziere) even with the hd pump and bigger radiator the engine overheated. After 1 year and more of searching I went back to the stock pump and ever since the engine runs nice and cool.
Btw, I abandoned the idea of a cam trigger wheel, will see how the engine runs the way it is set up now.

Re: coil near plug no spark
It'll run fine on wasted COP. The only possible issue is a shorter life of your coils but since I have yet to see a real D585 fail.........

Jeff, nice to hear from you, would be nice if we could keep in touch like we used to.prof315 wrote:It'll run fine on wasted COP. The only possible issue is a shorter life of your coils but since I have yet to see a real D585 fail.........
The next project will be launch control/traction control, I absolutely need it. Even with 295 tires in 3rd gearI have a hard time keeping traction.
