Did I hurt my cpu i/o? How do I test easily?

Post by Silverback »

Short version:
I believe I was feeding too much voltage to JS4, did I hurt it and how do I check?

Longer version:
For some thus far unknown reason I had SPR4 jumpered to JS4 ( http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 32&t=54562 ), and last night I was trying to get knock sensing working based on the documentation about 2/3 of the way down here:
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2 ... rdware.htm
which says that you need to limit the voltage output from the GM KS below 5V circuit before putting it in to JS4 or 5.

I'm also using a TPI adapter board:
http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_article ... _board.htm

which after checking the pinout wired the factory harness KS pin to Pin 6 on the DB37, which connects to SPR4.

Putting that all together I get the short version- I was feeding the full KS module output (which I haven't found documentation for but I believe has an output on the order of >10V), to JS4 which I believe is rated at 5v (I couldn't find the 4.7V Zener to do the voltage limiting recommended in the above link but could find a 5.1V, and found documentation that JS4 and 5 are good for .3V over their rated 5V, so that should be fine).

So now I'm trying to figure out _if_ I hurt it and how to check it.

Through a series of mishaps (which I have yet to figure out, trying to in the other thread), I managed to end up putting a constant 12VDC (the GM KS signal when it doesn't see knock) to pin JS4 on the CPU. I want to know if:
  • that hurt JS4/the CPU?
  • how do I tell/check it?

The adapter board has a circuit that prevents JS4 from being fed more than 5 volts.

By "adapter board" do you mean the MS3 PCB that plugs into the 40-pin socket on the mother-board, or do you mean the knock sense PCB?

He is using a TPI to MS2 adapter board.
