[solved] Needing more sensor inputs on MS3 Extra

Post by Lab_Engine »

Hello, I'm up to three students working on a Opel engine in our universities laboratory in Germany.

The engine is an Opel 16H, converted to FI and wasted spark ignition with a number of GM parts. The MS is setup in a way that allows us to control spark and injection length via two potentiometers, this conversion and setup was done by another group of students (two guys with a lot more experience than us three, but both of them moved away).

We now convert the engine to use an AGR valve, using the VVT signal output, this works ok already, temporally using the Spark poti. The problem we have now is a lack of sensor inputs. The additional inputs are in use, EGO2 is used for the SPARK poti, SPAREADC for the Injection poti, JS4 for an exhaust temperature sensor, JS5 is still free but I'm unsure if the manual for wiring it up is the same for a setup with MSExtra daughterboard usage.

IDLE_PWM (9) and CAM input VR (32) are still unused, but it is not possible to use those as sensor inputs, am I right? We need two extra sensor inputs, for that additional AGR poti and an exhaust pressure sensor.

Thanks for reading this wall of text, maybe some of you experts can help us :)

Cam VR In can be used for frequency inputs, but not voltage.

JS5 can be wired up using the same circuits as MS2.

But getting more analog inputs will require something like one of Jean's CAN based IO Extenders.

JS4 and JS5 are handled the same way; select an appropriate input filter depending on what it is you're trying to read.

If you're using ADC12 (EGO2) and ADC13 (SPAREADCin), you still have ADC11 (Baro / Ext MAP). If you STILL need more, take a look at jbperf's I/O Extender and theTinyIOx, for more ADCs than any one engine should even need!

The input circuits for JS4 and JS5 are covered in the MS3base/V3.0 Hardware manual PDF.

wow that was quick, thanks a lot.

this is what our I/O looks like atm (Ext_Map is used instead of the onboard one)

what about the Nitrous_in and Launch_in? Are they just an on/off switches?

Have you taken a look at the pin-out and wiring section of the manual?

Launch_in is a grounding input; Nitrous_in is a going-high (5v or 12v) input.

Thanks again.

I now made the proposed circuit for JS5 and soldered it into place, but I have another (small) problem: In the manual its written to hook up the signal wire to either SPR3 or SPR4, whatever fits best. But on our MS these two are both in use by the Exhaust Temp sensor. SPR1/CANH and SPR2/CANL are still free tho. Are those two just straight through connections to the DB37 plug (and thus pin 3 and 4) and useable to hook up JS5? The onboard pressur sensor keeps me from just tracing the lines.

SPR1,2,3,4 connect from the DB37 plug to the four pin headers. They don't go anywhere else until you solder in a jumper wire.

Thx, the third poti is working now on JS5. We decided to route all additional planned sensors not needed directly for the engine control through an external receiver unit, independet of the MS.

A video of the system running. May this be moved to success stories?
