Anja's MS2

Post by miky »

Hello from Uruguay, my name is Agustín, and i'm struggling with the carb to EFI conversion of Anja, my 1981 bmw e21 320/6.
I want to control fuel only, as i intend to keep my distributor, y got the manifold and hardware from an e30 320i, and i will instal all the idle control stock parts.
A couple of days ago i acquired my MS2, with the V3.0 board ( i bought a DIY autotune kit, jimstim and relay board) after assembling it, i got beaten up by 2 USB-serial adapters (usual drivers issue) i dusted of my old laptop with windows vista and eventually uploaded the firmware.
I followed every step of the assembly including the testing bits.
The thing is, now i can't seem to upload the code, either on the ms downloader or via tunerstudio.
I downloaded the MS2extra_3.3.3_release.zip, from where i got the firmware, and when runnung the msdownload2.00, it succesfully reads the file, and open the comm port, but then it shows an error: "ERROR: Monitor Mode failed" / "TX0d"/ RX: fd 3f bf/ ERROR: Unknown error status response, e=0xFD".
all of this in 43.62 seconds.

My settings are as follows: COM1/baud rate 115200/Verbosity:5/

Any ideas??
I read several threads, but could't find anything similar...

Try loading it with MS2loader_win32, you'll find it in the firmware folder.

That would depend on whether the cooked stim cpu is shorting or pulling down the supply voltage. Ms needs to be powered up with a good supply voltage to even try a firmware upload.
Find the Manuals up top under Quick links: Manuals. :RTFM:

I removed it, as well as the D4 diode, still nothing, i tried on the tunerstudio miniterminal to see if it¿s a comms problem, but without the daughterboard, and pins 12 and 13 jumpered, it echoes ahatever i write perfectly, when the daughterboard is installed i echoes some weird characters, as you can see in the previous screenshots i posted, y even dusted up my old desktop PC with windows XP, and still nothing.

The new stim processor is on its way, but it will take a week to ger here, since i Live in uruguay...
after removing the cooked diode and CPU, i got 5 volts on the jimstim Vreg....

Updates:

Recheched thepower supply and comms modules on the ms2, on the U1pins, it was all normal, a one point it appeared that software was going to upload, but an error came up and went back to square one,i have 2 usb to serial adapters, prolific type, and the odd thing is that when i connect one, lights flicker and turn off, with the other fuel pump led on the stim, and the 3 leds on the ms stay on
I can't even se a pattern, and have no idea what i can be doing wrong, real all the manuals, and a bunch of threads on similar problems, messed with baud rates, verbosity, buffers, tried installing the firmware with the win32 installer, the msdownload, tunerstudio, checked comms, checked voltages on the U1 pins, the stim, i'm fresh out of ideas... can anyone help me or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

Can you post a screen shot of the error you get when trying to upload firmware?

Are you able to try with a real serial port? Prolific USB adapters can be troublesome.

Updates:

Firmware is installed, i was using the transformer from a cordless drill battery charger, which is appaently no good... now i have another problem, i cant connecto to tunerstudio, the last status bar before connecting crashes and the offline prompt comes up, but it is surely a matter of configuration, as i tried it in another computer and it worked, i even got to fiddle with the coolant temp gauge, since i fried the stim CPU, so i call it a win

Can you also post a copy of the TunerStudioAppDebug.txt file?

Your MS2 still seems to be returning obscure data.

It appears you have either a firmware or cable issue.

Updates:

Tried using my dad's laptop and i got it to work for about 2minutes, then it crashes, and the only working pot seems to be the coolant temp, as it is the only gauge i can control...
Im attatching the debug file, if any of you can take a look at it, i'd be thankful, next week i'll be getting the rest of the parts i need to do the carb to efi conversion, and it would great to have the ECU working.

Thanks in advance

It appears the serial chip is hanging or crashed. You may have a feedback or short of some type.
