MS3 V3.0 Not Connecting to Computer

Post by acedeuce802 »

I built an MS3 V3.0 and cannot get it to connect it to my computer. This is being built for a 1999 Mazda Miata. I ran all of the voltage checks on the daughter card pin header and they all check out good. When the daughter card is plugged in, the three LED's illuminate and the LED on the JimStim illuminates when plugged in. I've tried multiple computers, one with fresh FTDI drivers for the USB cable and the old computer that I've been using to upload firmware and tune a DIYPNP and my friends V3.57 for years. I've tried both the USB and the DB9 with no luck.

I did first have Q9 and Q12 touching the heat sink, so I removed those (I'm using MS3x and don't need them) and replaced D19 (seems to be the first thing to blow), and revived voltage at the daughter card pin header.

Do you have any recommendations on what to try next, or any tests to run to see if anything is blown?

Thanks

Can you post a screen shot of what happens when you try to load firmware? There may be important clues in the exact wording of the error message.

Try downloading and running "portcheck" from the Downloads page.

What happens if you repeat the Port Check with the boot jumper in place?

The same results occur with the boot jumper in place, or removed. That screenshot was actually from when the boot jumper was in place.

I'd suggest you perform the serial loopback and other serial tests in the manuals.

I have too many projects.. just got back into troubleshooting this. All serial tests work. Loopback at the DB9 connector and loopback while jumping pin 12 and 13 on the 40 pin header return successful messages in HyperTerminal.

Any ideas on this? Think the daughter card is fried? Since it's getting the correct voltage at the pin header, and the serial loop back worked at the pin header, but still can't connect.

Sounds like the problem is on the daughter card at this point.

I did notice some damage to C3 on the daugherboard. Though I'm not sure if that has been like that or if that happened when I was trying to remove the knock module (trying to eliminate variables). It looked like the inboard solder pad had come loose, I attempted to solder it back and it seems to have a connection. Is pin 20 on the daughtercard pin header supposed to have continuity with both C1 and C3? The side of the caps that are closest to pin 20.

Think this could have anything to do with the connectivity issues, or should I just go ahead and try a new daughterboard?

I would try a real serial port, but I don't have any available. I'm pretty sure the computer isn't the issue since I've tried three computers which have all had 100% success connecting to MS3's in the past with this same cable.

For closure, I picked up a new daughtercard and I was able to successfully load firmware. Thanks for the help!
