U5 volt reg hot when adding ms3 board

Post by Lorr »

Hey guys,

I bought the MS3X parts from DIYautotune with expansion card.
And assembled the board with some guides from the miata forums.

And did the testing from the official assembly guide. (without ms3 daughterboard)

U7:
Pin 32 = 5v
Pin 19 = 5v
Pin 16 = 11.5V
Pin 02 = 5v

Banded side of D9 = 11,5V
Non Banded side of D9 = 5V

Left leg of U5 = 11V
Right leg of U5 = 5V

Probe area all 5V

When i add the white ms3 board, i wanted to connect it to the PC but that didn't work at all (no connection, can see the com port)
While i wanted to touch the heatsink it was extremely hot. The chip on the ms3 board itself doesn't get hot.
When i remove the ms3 daughter board the heatsink doesn't get hot anymore.

What can this be? Is the chip damaged? becaus it's brand new... and i didn't do anything with it yet.

Greetings,
Lorr

Clarify, please: the MS3 is not a "chip" in the normal sense, it is a PCB assembly that is about 3" x 3". You are talking about that board, not a single device, like the MS1 processor? Have you done any mods to the MS3 board?

my apologies for the confusion.

I followed these instructions http://westfieldmx5.sgrkempen.be/ms3/90-97-ms3/. Installed no extra mods.

I'm talking about the white daughterboard of ms3.
When i put 12volt on the MS V3.0 board (without the white ms3 board) everything is fine. (testing all voltages)
When i install the (white) ms3 board on top and put again 12volt on pin 28 the voltage regulator U5 gets very hot.

I also can't make a connection with the usb (i can see the com port). I don't have a computer with serial.

Here is a picture of my board:

I changed the title/post for a little bit more clarification.

I gotta ask... does your install require cutting out the corner of the MS3 as shown in that link?
