Missing volts!

Post by gearheads »

I just completed the assembly of my MS2 V3.0 board which I intend to use on a Duratec HE 2L engine with COPs and high impedance injectors. The crank sensor is a VR and the cam sensor a Hall without pull-up resistor.

These are the jumpers I installed:
XG1 to XG2
S12C to JS9
SPR1 to JS6
SPR2 to JS8
SPR3 to OptoIn to 1kR to 5vproto
OptoOut to JS10
VrOut to TSel
VrIn to TSelect
IGBTOut to Ign
IGBTIn to 330R to R26
IAC2A to pin 2 BIP373 pin 1 to 330R to R27
IAC2B to pin 2 BIP373 pin 1 to 330R to R29
IAC1B to pin 2 BIP373 pin 1 to 330R to JS11

Testing the board connected to a JimStim V1.5 I get the following readings:
1-Voltage at JimStim input: 12.02v
2-Voltage at DB37 pin 28: 11.21v

Checking voltage at the 40 pin connector:
3-V32/31: 0v (Should be 5v)
4-V32/20: -5.04v (Shouldn´t be negative)
5-V20/19: 0v (Should be 5v)
6-V20/2: -5.01v (Shouldn´t be negative)
7-V19/16: 0v (Should be 12v)

Checking voltage at other points:
8-Vgndproto/leftpinU5: 10.5v
9-Vgndproto/5vproto: 4.98v
10- VbootH1: 1.78v
11- VTSEL: 0.1v

Mica insulation test: All open

My questions are:
I guess the voltage drops from step 1 to step 2 (0.81v) and from step 2 to step 8 (0.71v) are due to current going through semiconductors. Are these drops OK?
How is it that the voltage at steps 4 and 6 is negative?
I don´t have any voltage at steps 3, 5, and 7. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Are you certain you are counting pin numbers from the right start? Pin 1 is bottom right with the heatsink at the top, component side. Basically, the socket is turned round 180 degrees from what you might expect.

It's just that no 12v at pin 16 would be hard to explain if you've linked S12c to JS9.

Duuuhhhh, either Mr Alzheimer is playing mind games upstairs or being in the southern hemisphere make me see things upside down .....
Thank you Dave, I´ll test again during the weekend.

If you've built the PCB yourself, worth checking all voltages before plugging in the processor. Details in the build instructions. And do use either a low current supply for testing, or fit a 1 amp fuse in the supply.
