Installing the Internal Knock Sensor - MS3X

Post by garrycol »

I have just received my Internal Knock Sensor kit but I cannot see how it can be installed onto the white card.

The instructions say: I have removed some steps not relevant to the post.
3.4.13.1 Internal Knock Module
Knock Module.jpg
The module requires soldering to the top of the MS3 card.
• Position the knock module as shown in line with rear or the DIP40 pins (i.e. adjacent to C3 on the MS3
card)
• Solder on the six connecting pins visible and the two support pins on the other side.
Module on the Board.jpg
• Remove the MS3 card from the board.
• Solder a flying wire from the PM2 pad on the knock module to the PM2 pin header on the reverse of the
MS3 card.
• Re-install MS3 card.
• Pads K1 and K2 are inputs for knock channels 1 and 2. They should be connected to a spare
connector pin of your choice (e.g. SPR3,4)

I will be able to solder the 8 connecting pins onto the knock module circuit board no problem. However the first problem I have is that the holes in the white circuit board do not line up with the connecting pins on the knock module - I mean with the knock module in the position indicated in the pic the holes in the white board have no resemblance to the connecting pins. Even if they did, the diameter of the holes in the white circuit board are only half the diameter of the connecting pins so will not fit on.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Garry

The photo shows one installed.
You have to solder the pins together.

Thanks to both of you for your responses - that Youtube video really clarifyed what needs to be done - I was looking for holes in the white circuit board that are clearly not there. With the next iteration of the instruction I suggest a minor wording change to indicate there are no holes in the white circuit board and you are soldering to the pins already there starting with C3 - and/or a a link to the vid.

Thanks for the help - great as always

Where or who do I find to install this for me? I bought the module but frankly intimidated to try it. Hard for me to see stuff that close. Surely someone hires themselves to do this or do I send it to DIY . I looked on the website and don't see where the service is offered.

thanks

The pictures in the manual show that the module gets soldered to the existing pins.

It is designed to be DIY installed. However, if you are intimidated by it you are probably best to have it done by someone more experienced.
