MSLogger 4.2 (Android app) on the Play Store (For free!)

Post by 93white3400z »

Hi,

Dave just posted earlier today a new version of MSLogger on Google Play Store. It used to be on there at the end of last year but the difference now is that it's completely free, open source, have more features, is less buggy and a millions other things :D The app code can be downloaded here: https://github.com/scudderfish/MSLoggerBase and if you have the ability, you can even pull request us your changes!

Some of the features are:
- Configurable dashboard (not 100% yet but getting there!)
- Gauge, Numeric indicator, Histogram and Bar graph
- GPS information logging
- Datalogs manager which can view/email/delete
- Basic log viewer and scatter plot
- Support most of MS1/MS2/MS3 firmwares

Get your copy here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... y.mslogger
and give us your feedback, report bugs, etc :)

We should have much more to come and we can prioritize based on users requests 8)

I just want to publically say 'Thanks' to Sebastien for all the good stuff he's done for this application. Without him it'd still be in bitrot hell on my HD. 4.2 is really good, and it's going to get better.

Regards,
Dave

Incidentally, MSLogger already generates log files compatible with Race Render http://www.racerender.com/RR2/Features.html

And thanks to Dave for making this app open source so anybody could help him making it better! I learn a lot about Android in the last month and I know some people would be interested to learn too so I hope more people will shim in and help us making it even better now! Again, anything help including bugs reports, feedback, pull request, etc :)

Play wants you device to have the following capabilities :-

android.hardware.bluetooth,
android.hardware.location,
android.hardware.location.gps,
android.hardware.location.network,
android.hardware.touchscreen

GPS is really optional, but because we ask for permission for it, Play assumes the application requires it. Whenever I upload a new version to Play, I'll put the APK file on github as well. You won't get automatic updates if you download the APK directly though.

I got MSLogger running last night after a big fight. The biggest issue is that my Android did not find MSLogger in Google Play. My tablet happens to be a ViewSonic G-Tablet. I am suspect each individual tablet has to be approved for a software download. You may have to keep the software available on a server so that people with obscure hardware can still get this app to still work.

The other thing that threw me for a bit was the switch on the Squirt transmitter was in discover mode. When you don't use things much, you forget the tricks.

I have not tried the data logging yet. The squirt was running MS3 1.1.1 on the bench. I plan to make some sort of bracket for the tablet in the car.

Way cool work. Keep going.

Is there a way to move/add gauges?

Google Play can be a bit fussy at times. Because of that, whenever I push an update to it, I'll also add a direct download apk file at https://github.com/scudderfish/MSLoggerBase/downloads Unfortunately you won't get auto notification of updates though.

The number and position of the gauges is fixed, but you can change what they display. Press Menu and select "Enable Gauge Editing". Then you can swap gauges by dragging them, and if you double tap on a gauge you'll get a dialog box to change its properties (type, which channel it's connected to, and the display limits). Select the menu item again to go back to normal operation, where tapping a gauge will place a marker in the MSL file.

I noticed on the bottom left corner of the screen is a "GPS Available" Is it possible to get speed from there? Would it be possible to log lt/right acceleration some day?

If it says 'gps available' it means that it is writing lat, long, speed, bearing, accuracy, and satellite time to the MSL log file as well as all the normal engine parameters. It also writes the GPS Update flag that Race Render wants as per this thread http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 33&t=46073

:)

Acceleration is trickier as it is affected by the orientation of the phone, and any change due to pitch and roll. We should put it on the to do list anyway.

I use software to adjust for the lean in the data file later. Here is some of the stuff I have done with this sort of thing.

That's really cool! What did you use to process that?

Some of it is done with a QStarz GPS feeding data to my Droid phone and processed thru a program called Trackmaster. Trackmaster outputs data as a XLS and and/or Google Earth format. I also use data loggers from GCDataConcepts that does three axis accelerometers at up to 360 hz. I would love to tie all of this into the Squirt Data Card format. The top plot is done off a dash data logger.

I would love to know more about this analysis software. Could you start an external thread with details?

I built my own datalogger that has a 10Hz GPS and accelerometer along with the full MS2Extra data output. Its great but the analysis software is severely lacking. There is only so much I can get out of excel tables and graphs.

Hi Guys,
thanks for your great work.
Just one question: Is there a chance to add a custom *.ini file? I am using the MS2 software modded by GSlender, but obviously MSLogger doesn´t "know" it.
As a result, it won´t connect to my MS.
Or am I just missing something?

Which version of gslender ? It should be supported already. There is currently no way for a user to easily add an ini. We can usually do it in a few mins tho.
