Nexus 7 with Shadow Dash MS "Going online"

Post by [L'e$kro] »

I've just purchased a second hand Google Nexus 7 gen 1 32gb to run Shadow Dash with my 2 cars that are Megasquirted.
I believe the tablet was "reseted" as I had to go through an assistant when I first powered it on.

ISSUE:
In Shadow Dash MS, after connecting to the dongle the app seems stuck at "Going Online"
Image
I have the same issue with both my cars running different setups

SETUP:
The tablet is running Android OS 4.3
Shadow Dash Beta. version 1.19 from memory, although the splash screen says 1.18 when opening the first time.
Same issue with stable version before I tried the Beta.

Mazda MX5
MSPNP Gen 1 (MS1). Hi Res code "10g"
eBay $15 bluetooth dongle (Similar as this one)

Peugeot 205 Gti
MS2. Extra Code version 3.x, can't remember exactly.
BT Dongle that looks externally the same as the one suggested for use with Shadow Dash MS's website.

A few things that I've tried so far:
I can use Tuner Studio on both cars through BT, with my Macbook running OSX.
A friend of mine can use Shadow Dash MS with his HTC phone connected to my MX5.
He also borrows my 205's dongle which works fine in his own MX5 running MS2.
From the above it's pretty obvious that the issue comes from my tablet rather than rest of setup. However my Nexus tablet works fine with MS Droid on my own car.

I've reinstalled the Shadow Dash app several times, with the same behaviour.

Any clue?

Thanks!

I just tried 1.18 against an MS1 and got similar results. I would put 1.01 back on and I'll have it back in order for the next release.

Thanks for your reply Phil

Interestingly it doesn't work either with my MS2 on the 205, but I've only tried once and symptoms may differ slightly.
I'll reinstall the stable build and retry on both cars, and report back.

Thanks again for your support, much appreciated!

EDIT:
I possibly applied to the Beta testing scheme before I installed the app for the first time, and i assume by doing so it downloaded the latest beta version when I purchased the app on the Play Store?
So basically i have to bail out from the beta scheme and redownload the app.

I never had any Android product so far, so I'm a bit new to this :D

I can confirm, I uninstalled the Beta version and reinstalled the stable release 1.01 from your website and it works perfectly on the MX5 with Ms1 / HiRes code.
I didn't understand that signing up for the Beta testing will download the latest build from the Play Store, I thought I had to install it manually.

So yes, I was running the Beta version all the time.

Thanks again for your help Phil!

Hi

Same thing for me. I purchased a second hand Nexus 7 2012 32 gb too just for shadow dash. She is running under Cyanogenmod 10.2 who is based on android 4.3. I performed the install by myself and it's perfectly clean.

My car is a Ford Probe 2.0l and the megasquirt is diypnp kit (76 pin denso style) for Probe v6 OBD I that I adapted for the 4 cyl model OBD II. This car have almost everything in common with Mazda MX6 and 626.
Same result, even after many tries. 1.01 works pretty well (just long to find GPS signal most of the time) but 1.18 beta never succeed to go online. I don't download the app through the playstore but directly on the website and install it myself for both versions.

My bluetooth adapter is from LDPerformance, you can see it here:
http://www.ldperformance.co.uk/bluetooth-adapter.html

Before this, I used my Macbook Pro with TS registered and a RS232 to USB adapter with a prolific chip (I have another one who never worked, don't remember the brand). When I was under OSX 10.7, TS worked fine but was slow, then I updated to 10.8 it never wanted to work after trying to change the language to french to make a video demonstration for my forum even after multiple install/uninstall/cleaning... and I decided to run it in a virtual machine (Virtual Box + WIN LSD who is a lightened version of Windows XP). It ran well a while but was too heavy, it was killing my battery too fast. So I changed VirtualBox for Parallels Desktop when the last version had been released, it's awesome the work they made, it's like run Windows program natively. Recently I installed the last and FREE version of OSX (10.9 Mavericks) and I received few after the newsletter from TS and I decided to give it a try for the fuel consumption and warmup autotune (who are both really cool features I was waiting for) and it ran like a charm! So i dumped the virtual machine for the moment.

I tried MSDroid too (the real time tuning through the tablet was my first intention) but UI is far to be as nice as Shadow Dash, so I use both, sometimes even together!

Are you french? there isn't so much people who have 205's in the rest of the world.

I have the connectivity issue fixed, but didn't put out the new beta because was in the middle of integrating the WiFi driver and have been bogged down with putting the final touches on the TS release. I'll see if I can get the new beta out today, even if I turn off the half complete stuff for now.

I had connectivity issues between my Macbook and Tuner Studio before, but it used to work at some stage, I sometimes had to keep the system preferences window open and update name to keep it connected, I'll retry with 10.9 to see if it's better.
The only thing that is handy about MSDroid is that it allows tuning, handy to switch stuff like launch control or over boost protection On or OFF while on the go without laptop. One day perhaps Phil will add the VE Analyze Live to Shadow Dash and that would be the perfect setup!

I havent got a chance to try the tablet with my ms2 in the 205 as i'm installing a roll cage in it and it's in bits at the moment.
And yes, I'm french, but I live in Ireland :D

For me OS X has always been the best OS with Bluetooth not counting Android. But I was on Snow Leopard, I haven't tried it out since the OS upgrade.

Hi!
I added to my dash a digital gauge for "GPS accuracy" with TS 2.5.01B and when I put it on Shadow Dash MS 1.20B it makes it bug and quit the app at opening. I had made multiple modification to my dash so I had to proceed by elimination to found that it was this one. I put back all the other one without any problem. Then I tried with other releases of TS to export the dash (2.5 stable) and tried it on SD (1.01 stable), same problem. So it seems that SD doesn't support this gauge.

It looks as though it isn't the GPS accuracy gauge, but another blank gauge set to a null channel.
I removed it from the attached, but will make sure SD handles that better.
