Some Shadow Dash Questions...

Post by arjay »

Hi!

I bought Shadow Dash MS as well as the 10hz GPS a while back and recently installed them. I am currently running without a ECM/Module (if that matters).

Couple of Q's....

I set the options in Shadow Dash to use kilometers instead of mph. Yet, the default dash still shows MPH and seems to indicate MPH as well. How can I change this?

I am using a Nexus 7 tablet and each time Shadow Dash tries to re-connect (assuming I shut off the engine) it always has to re-pair and each time asks me for the code. Is there a way to make the tablet just auto-connect with no code?

Lastly, if I wanted to edit the stock dashboard how would I do this?

Thanks very much, and sorry if some of these q's have been asked before.

Just out of curiosity - are you on the latest OS release for the Nexus 7? I had an issue - my N7 died the night before a race, I bought a new one, didn't update it, and had all sorts of strange BT connect issues like that. After the race, I updated the OS, and everything was fine after that. Not sure if that's your problem, but thought it was worth mentioning.

For the GPS speedometers, do a long click on it and select "Change XXX gauge"
Then select "GPS Gauges"
Then you can select the kph or MPH gauge of your choice.

If you are using a controller speed gauge such as an MS3 VSS speedometer, then you need to be connected to the ECU and then open "Project Settings" from the menu. Select KPH in there.

Yes this sounds like a problem with your tablets Bluetooth. You should only have to enter your pairing code once, then it will auto connect.

Hi guys - thanks for the replies!

I'm using a Google Nexus 7 Tablet with the latest O/S - 4.4.2 - it's a very clean tablet with little on it.

Bluetooth does work. I was able to change to gauges to show KM - thanks very much!

I'm still getting frequent pairing request every time we start the app. We are using the external 10Hz GPS that we bought from your site. Once I'm a bit more experienced with it I'll post back.

How does a person alter/create their own gauge?

The frequent pairing requests is odd. The pairing is handled by the OS, I have only seen that happen when there was a bug in the bluetooth for specific device. However, in your case with a Nexus 7 running on 4.4.2 you should be fine. I have one of those running 4.4.2 and no troubles with holding a pair.

Is it loosing the pair to multiple devices or just one 1?

Hi Phil, thanks for the reply!

We just got the GPS powered up the other day and took the bike for a quick blast so I don't have enough time on it to fully grasp how everything works. I don't want to report an issue until I've ruled out first that it's not between the keyboard and the seat  After that I will report any findings in more a intelligent manner :RTFM:

Until then, one thing I am interested in is in altering the default gauge. Is there a FAQ or something that will show me how, or even how to create a whole new gauge package with a custom background/logo etc?

Thank you! Am I correct in assuming that I have to have a module for Tuner Studio to connect to before I can modify the dash?

Actually, on Shadow Dash you have to connect to an ECU before you can update the dash files, but Tunerstudio doesn't care. You just need to open a project with the proper firmware you are going to be using, then you can edit and add dashboards in designer mode while offline.

Oh-oh...two more questions... :D

I'm making an analog tach - to that end;

1) How do remove the numerical RPM indicator from the gage (so it's just a sweeping analog tach)
2) How do I resize the tach?

Sorry for the dumb questions - I'm been looking but can't figure it out :(

I figured out #2 - there's a red square on the cross that pops up when you click on a gage. If you hold down the mouse on the red square you can then re-size it.

Also, does anyone know how to get a logo on the dash? I tried copy and paste but it doesn't seem to be working.

I don't have ShadowDash, but in TS if you right click over the dash you get a pop-up box. Click [Background][Set Background Image][Other Images], then browse to the desired jpg, gif, or png.

On the normal Analog gauges, there is no way to turn off the value display completely. The Analog bar does this.
But what you could do in most cases is cover it with an indicator that has no text.

Also, does anyone know how to get a logo on the dash? I tried copy and paste but it doesn't seem to be working.
In addition to putting a logo on the dash background as dontz125 suggested, you can put an indicator on, then set the "Off Image" to your logo. This gives a good deal more flexibility as you can size the logo as needed and place it where ever you want.

now this is interesting! I missed it before because I never customized indicators, only gauges...
I've just tried it, awesome. I've put a png as "off image" and set "off text" and "off background" to transparent. Perfect logo.

Hi Phil;

I had a chance to spend more time on this issue and it has to be repaired, with a code, every time the power is cycled. Not sure what the issue is, or even if this is 'normal'.

Application is a motorcycle with your 10Hz GPS installed and running off the bike (so it power cycles with the bike).
ShadowDash is on a Google Nexus 7 tablet.
No ECU Installed

The odd thing is that I just went back out to nail it down and it seems to be somewhat intermittent. I mean, it's happening often but of course when I'm watching for it it won't do it.
I do have the ShadowDash set up to turn BT on and OFF when done but regardless, I usually have to enter in the pairing code (0000).

Maybe you can take a look into it when you have time.

I should also mention Shawdow Dash doesn't always start. I often get a popup window saying unfortunately Shadow Dash can't start (or words to that effect) with an option to report it. It seems if I try and re-start it 5x or so it usually will. I also tried un-installing/re-installing the app to no effect.

There is something strange here. The Bluetooth pairing isn't something the app has control over, that is handled by the OS. I have only run across that with tablets that had a problem with the image. I do have a 2012 Nexus 7 on 4.4.2 here and it doesn't have such a problem.
Is it a standard image you are on?

Is it the GPS you are having the re-pairing issue with or the RS232 adapter or both?

How are you communicating with the MegaSquirt, BT or USB?

It's the same tablet running a stock ROM (4.4.2) and it's got very little installed on it. In other words, it's clean!
As mentioned, I don't have an ECU to connect to. This wasn't the original plan, it's just where I'm at right now.

Often, when I start Shadow Dash it will report an error and close right away (it actually doesn't get to the dash screen). This will happen consecutively. The other day I rode into town, went into a store, came out, fired up the bike (and the 10Hz GPS) and waited for the tablet to connect - it didn't. So I closed & manually started up Shadow Dash and it reported something with respect to this being the first time it was run and that I would have to re-start. I did that, told it to connect again, and got the same message. Shadow Dash had been run and configured several times before. When it does connect I always have to go to the pairing screen and enter the 0000 code or it will not work.

Recently I noticed something new - the GPS light would not come on on the dash but the ECU connected light would. There is no ECU to connect to at present. So...
I agree there's something strange here, I suspect it's probably several issues converging.

Where is this located? On the tablet?
