Shadow Dash open when charging

Post by NolanMenne »

Hey Phil and Brian, I have a suggestion for a update. It would be great to have an option in preferences to have Shadow Dash open when the charger is connected and then quit when the charger is disconnected. This would be perfect way to control Shadow dash with the ignition. As of now if you just let the tablet go to sleep with Shadow Dash running the battery in the tablet will drain fairly quickly, but if I let the tablet go to sleep with Shadow Dash closed the tablet does not lose charge.
Is that even possible?

Thanks
Nolan

Seems possible.
You can use an app to launch it when the charge cable goes on like:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ugin&hl=en
Or that can be built into SD.

The only part I'm not sure about is having SD force your phone to sleep when you loose charge. For going to sleep SD could block going to sleep only when the charge cable is not connected.

Hey Phil, thanks for the reply. Yes I have that the "Plug-IN" app paid, and it does launch SD just fine. However, it does not close SD when you disconnect the charger. So when I turn the key on, SD will launch but when I turn the key off SD does not close and the tablet will go to sleep with SD running, therefore the tablet's battery will drain while sleeping. I want SD to close when the charger is disconnected (Key turned off) but before the tablet falls asleep.
I am using 2 separate apps to accomplish this now. I have the "PLUG-IN" app launching SD and a BT app launcher to close SD when BT disconnects. It works, but it would be awesome to just have the options in SD.

Thanks

I tried the same thing with Tasker too, and it has the same issue where it can not kill SD, but it starts it fine.

Just adding that I just finished up getting the plug-in app working, and it works great on my Nexus7. Waiting for that auto-shutdown feature within SD though, any ideas as to a timeline?

Keep up the good work Phil!

On a Nexus7 I use a custom rom which does exactly what you are asking for, plus it enables OTG+ charging. It is a little involved, but if you are interested I can walk you through it.
I know that rooting, custom roms and kernels on Android can be a little intimidating , but if you can manage to do a MS setup it should be no problem.

Thanks Old Guy, Yes I would be interested in doing that. I use SD as my only instrument cluster so I would like it to operate like a part of the car. I am not familiar at all with "rooting " or "rom" but Im sure we can manage.

Thanks,

We should probably do this using pm, but I decided to do it here as someone else might want to do this. If the administrators have a problem with this i will conform to their wishes.
The first thing to do is go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1766475 and click on the link in the first post. That will take you to the developers website. This is where you download the toolkit and there are links to some guides for rooting your nexus 7. Look through his site and get a little familiar with the software, then download and install the program.
When you have installed the software and the driver we will go to the next step.Don't do anything else because if you get ahead of yourself and screw up you can brick your device.

Sorry but for some reason I thought you had a nexus7.
Here is a link on rooting your tablet http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... p=49452924.
It gets a little complicated and I don't know if there are any custom roms available. There are some links in the post to some rom information, but I will leave the research up to you. Might just want to wait for the dev to include this feature in the next release.
Here is a little advice for anyone planning on buying a tablet for an in car install. Go to the xda site http://forum.xda-developers.com/ and do a search for the tablet you are planning on buying . Then you will know about hard it is to root the device, what kind of custom roms are available and see if there are threads for other successful in car installs.
Again, sorry for the misunderstanding.

It's ok, but I do thank you for the response and trying to help! I will probably wait until Phil fits it into Shadow Dash. The way I have it set up now it does do what I want but it takes 2 apps and has a hiccup every now and then.

Thanks

Hi OldGuy!

I have a Nexus 7 and have no problems with rooting/flashing - which ROM are you using?

Is it better?

Here is the rom that I am using. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=2660803
Read the whole thread so you can get a better idea of whats going on.
You also have to install power event manager to enable fast mode OTG charging.
There is a link in the first post to the apk.
I have just been playing around with this and haven't used in an install, so can't give much feedback on it.
If you have any problems LMK.

Hi,

I found this on the market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... s.liveware

It is able to start SD when connected to charger and also if the power removed it can go to the Home screen and allow the tablet to fall into sleep after 15sec inactivity.

I found no better app until now to manage SD. Does any of you use something else? I use direct USB connection via OTG and would use charging as well while connected via OTG when the car is on, so SD must run when power present.

Thanks,

Zoltan

Hi Phil,

can you estimate for us please when the power moding features can be built into SD?

Now I am facing an issue, that in case there is no charging and SD should go to sleep, it does not because it is saying, connecting to FTDI device, so there is a continuous activity in OTG mode to the direction of MS3 so it not allow to sleep the system.

It would be great if screen could be turned on and off by charging and when charging than have a "clean" quick connect. (Sometimes SD fail to connect quickly, but takes 15 - 40sec to go online, I do not know why, but it is may due to the continuous connection trials while MS3 is inactive, but the FTDI device is present.)

I found an app called stay awake on Goggle Play, I will see what it does. The above mentioned app does not work, re - connection fail all the times after force close and restart.

Thanks,

Zoltan

Hi Phil,

I tried the stay awake application and looks like cannot override your connection request from SD, so sleep is not allowed if not in AC charge.

Does it possible to have a connection method over the current one which could be enabled / chosen by the user and driven by AC charge in?

I mean if this is selected than there is no re connection trial enabled only if AC charge detected. The prevent sleep mode feature can be driven by AC charge input as well.

In this case we can have a fully ignition controlled dashboard with good or better reconnect speed and sleep / screen shut down (low power consumption) mode.

Thanks,

Zoltan

Yes it should be doable. I will try to get it in shortly.

Sounds great!

Yes, I did implement this, but it still has a few issues to work through. It will be in the next release.
