Shadowdash without Bluetooth

Post by mickeymarrows »

Had a search around, but curiously I don't seem to be able to find an answer..

I've got my hands on a faulty 2012 Nexus 7, the problem being that its bluetooth module has died and I'm wondering if Im going to be able to use this with Shadowdash?

I currently use a fully functioning rooted 2012 Nexus 7 in a permanent install using the Timur USBROM, but it would be great if I could swap it for the faulty unit and connect via USB.

The same would go for the GPS, I would need to buy a USB GPS module to replace the EFI Analytics BT GPS module.. would that work? Would Shadowdash see that connected to the USB Hub?

If you get an FTDI based USB to rs232 adapter and OTG Cable, you can connect from USB.

However, I don't know if you can connect a USB GPS. You would need to fine one that has android drivers and see if it works with a hub so you can have both USB devices connected at the same time.

It works!

My setup:
Nexus 7 2012, rooted, flashed with Timur's ROM
MS2
FTDI to USB cable
GlobalSat GU 353 USB GPS module
You Are Here GPS android application
OTG Y Cable
USB Hub

The MS2 and the GPS are both plugged into the USB hub and the hub is plugged into the OTG cable. Power is supplied via the OTG cable.

In developer options on the Nexus I have "allow mock locations" selected.

Launching the YAH GPS and connecting the GPS unit then streams the NMEA data, Shadow Dash then reads that data perfectly.

The only issue I have now is that the moment the Nexus 'sleeps' then YAH GPS app disconnects and has to be resumed manually when the Nexus wakes up, somewhat defeating the perpose of the TIMUR ROM. I'm going to email the developer and see if there's anything he can do, if we can get YAH GPS to stay connected during sleep then I have my perfect perminent dash install!
