Shadow Dash speedo from VSS issues

Post by therealpinto »

Hi all

I have recently started to try Shadow Dash on my MS3 w MS3X equipped Capri. I get it to work reasonably well (after realizing TS3 dashes aren't really supported yet).

The one thing I can't get to work correct is the VSS based speedo. I have a Borg Warner T5 (Sierra Cosworth) fitted with a standard Ford VSS, and for the last year that has been read my the MS and I use an output to drive a modified Ford electronic speedo. But that modification to fit it inside the standard Capri gauge cluster works so/so and that's why I want to replace it with Shadow Dash.

But the speedo in SD over reads with massive amounts (like doing 1500 km/h in first gear), no matter how I try to change the settings. This is even though the above mentioned speedo is reasonably accurate (and I can get it to change calibration by altering the settings).

Any hints are welcome.

Edit: The log file is a slow drive, 1st and 2nd gear, max 20 km/h or so.

For now I use a GPS based speedo in SD but that's not really legal here.

Another thing while on the topic; I think it would be great to be able to have non linear gauges. The speedo for example would be nice to setup with a larger resulolution in lower speeds.

Regards
Gustaf

Looks like you do have the VSS reading something.. It seems like you should be able to make it read a more reasonable value by adjusting Scale in the Speed and Sensor dialog. 200 seems quite load for pulses / km.

Thanks!

The VSS does work and it powers (through the MS output) the electronic needle speedo pretty OK. It's just TS/SD that does not seem to show decent values.

I can have the speedo show say 32 km/h at a GPS speed of 30 km/h and then TS (and SD) shows like 400 km/h. To me TS and SD does not react logically to changes in the scale.

What is TS/SD really showing, is it the input value from the VSS?

TS/SD is just showing what is reported back by the firmware...

Are you saying the VSS reads close to sane, then changes it's readings without changing the VSS settings?

I think I need to do more testing.

In the log file attached, the Ford electronic speedo connected to MS showed sane speeds, while the MT/SD displays insane speeds.

According to my notes, Ford speedos are generally calibrated for 1000 turns per mile, OTOH I find information saying that US Ford speedos use 8000 pulses per mile.

The last MSQ was after I played around with the settings. Earlier I had the "Pulses (%)" (for Vehicle speed sensor 1) set at 1000 and also the "Scale" for VSS output set at 1000. This gave sane speedometer readings on the dash but I never tried it with TS/SD.

In the log file the VSS value is around 1170 just cruising along at 1500 rpm in second gear.

The TS/SD does not change its behaviour on its own but it does not match the VSS output behaviour (as far as I can tell).

One thing to note: I realize now that I probably run an outdated MS3 firmware, MS3 release 1.2.0 - could that be the issue?
