Can Somebody Confirm Ignition Options for 420a?

Post by cggorman »

I've been on other projects for a bit but I'm coming back around to this standalone ms2 420a.

I built a JimStim after I discovered that the MegaStim wouldn't actually let me test much. So far everything seems to be working fine on the bench but I'm confused about the ignition options. I'm seeing contradicting info on input capture and spark output.

MS2/E Neon/420A HTML Manual indicates falling edge and going low.
MS2/E Ignition HTML Manual indicates rising edge and going high.
New PDF Hardware Manual indicates rising edge and going high.

2 against one, BUT...
The JimStim (with dip switch 6 on) only syncs when I use Falling Edge.

Edited to attach my msq, just in case.

The JimStim provides a simulated signal, it isn't necessarily of the correct polarity.

Have you followed the instructions in the new manual for configuring 420A ?

With coils and injectors disconnected, please set ignition mode to "Log crank & Cam" and take a composite log and attach it here. I can easily tell you the correct polarity to use.

I built the board from printed copies of the old documentation. I printed the book before the new PDFs existed. Assuming nothing has changed in the interim, my board should conform to the 420a schematic.

My initial post with details on the build:

The engine is assembled but I'm still finishing up the car so it's going to be a while yet before I can actually get a log and real life feedback from the engine.

Since it's a fresh build I'm looking to identify and eliminate any problems that would cause the engine to fail starting. I can't spend hours turning over a dry engine trying to troubleshoot the ECU... I don't need refinement at the first start, just a rough idle to get the oil pump primed and flowing.

Remove the spark-plugs, and disconnect fuse for Fuel Pump, coils and injectors.
With spark plugs removed, the engine bearings will not be loaded during cranking.

Crank the engine with the starter until you have oil pressure.
From there you can crank as mutch as your starter accetps before going hot. No engine - Freshly built, new or old, will be damaged as long as fuel/ignition is disabled, and spark plugs are removed.

After you have oil pressure - It takes just 2-3 attempts with the Composite logger and re-pinning of the sensors, to get the polarity right. It's done within 30 minutes. (I did my re-pinning of crank-sensor in 3 minutes, checked the logger, all looked ok. She fired straight up after this).
