That is a cool video! A feature to sweep the ignition timing and AFR would be VERY cool in TunerStudio. Someone should suggest this over in that forum.

Of course tuning on a brake dyno will produce the best (and fastest) results. Road tuning could get you most of the way there if you're willing to put enough effort into it. (it is a lot of effort)

It could work on the road if we had DBW throttle. Engage spark hook mode on the freeway or any other flat straight road and let TS search for lowest MAP while maintaining speed. Could work...

You do a few runs at full throttle with data logging turned on and look at the results with Megalogviewer. Make some adjustments, do a few more runs, then compare results to see what improved and what didn't. Keep doing this until you are satisfied with the results. All the while it's a good idea to have some sort of knock monitoring to make sure you don't advance the timing too far if the engine is knock limited. Some will reach best torque before knocking, others won't.

sounds legit - any advice for working with the ML??

The best advice for MLV is to have the biggest monitor you can get.

Actually if you really want to be thorough the best thing to do is to export several throttle pull logs into Excel (or equivalent) so you can average and plot the results. The problem with road tuning is that it's harder to control all the variables (like the road itself), so you need to take an average of a few runs and use that for comparison. I did something like this years ago and honestly I don't think I would do it again. It's a huge PITA and takes FOREVER.
